Dated: Thirteen Yards in One Second: Why You Can Never Outrun a Charging Bear

Via Dan

It seems like every spring here in Alaska, we are faced with stark reminders of how dangerous bears can be. Especially in the spring, after a winter of not really having to worry about it, we can get really complacent. It’s been a somewhat early spring here this year, and already there have been at least two confirmed maulings by either grizzlies or brown bears.

Even though I am in bear country frequently, and have had several close encounters, I also get complacent, because I know the chances are slim that I'll be attacked when I’m unprepared. The unfortunate fact about bear attacks though, is that if we knew they were going to happen, they wouldn’t.

  2. Dang! That is why I keep my Ruger 77/44 mag handy when I’m outside, especially in the spring.

    1. I'm sure you see many each year and by the way what other wildlife to you have? I imagine, deer, turkeys.....? I need to look up your location again to see if anything has changed. I love Google Earth.

  3. Yes, we have a flock of turkeys that roam over the mountain. Right now they’re all flauntin’ their feathers and being impressive, lol. We also have mule and white tail deer, elk, always a couple of moose roamin’ around (I’m just as wary of them as the bears!). The neighbor has taken three bear off our place and the husband has scared off a sow bear and her three cubs with a bobcat. We haven’t seen a bear for a while though as we have Stimson lumber company land to the west and north of us and they have run the bear out for now as they seem to be trying to strip everything growing from their land. The bear will be back once that calms down. We also have mountain grouse, rabbits, coyotes, and wolves. I’m sure with the deer and elk population we have mountain lions too but I’ve never actually seen one of them. We have timothy hay fields below our place on the mountain and sometimes they will be filled with herds of elk. It’s a beautiful sight.

    1. Goodness, if you hunted you'd never have to buy food! & beautiful it is, I'm sure. Post some pictures when ever you have the time, which you never have I know! :)
