When the scorpion’s sting is probing us to the quick, shall we pause to chop logic?”
“A fig for the Constitution” if it does not protect our most basic rights was John Randolph’s nineteenth century estimation of the value of the Constitution. In 2021 his words of warning are even more applicable.
What power does the Constitution have to protect the First Amendment’s guarantee to peacefully assemble and the free exercise of religion when the government can declare a crisis and issue orders closing houses of worship? A fig for the Constitution! What power does the Constitution have to enforce the Fifth Amendment’s prohibition of the government’s “taking without due process of the law” when the government can declare a crisis, and take away private property by closing and bankrupting private businesses? A fig for the Constitution! What power does the Constitution have to protect private citizens’ Second Amendment Rights when a husband and wife who used legally owned firearms to protect their homes from leftists’ mobs are targeted by government for prosecution? A fig for the Constitution! What value is the Constitution’s guarantee of free speech when government sponsored monopolies in the digital and mainline media can censor speech that violates their neo-Marxist “community standards?” A fig for the Constitution!

ReplyDeleteThe key to the restraint of government can only be an armed, vigilant, and freedom-loving people. If the people lack sufficient arms, or are unaware of what's being done to them and its probable consequences, or are unattached to individual liberty as a sacred right and principle, they will fail to restrain the depredations of the State, whether by unwillingness or inability. That's why the totalitarians always:
1. Target the educational and communications sectors of a nation first and foremost;
2. Strive to divide the people, setting some against others;
3. Forbid the private ownership of weapons.
It could hardly be simpler...yet it appears too complex for most Americans of today.

DeleteThank you and sadly correct it seems. I had more information on 'A Fig For The Constitution' but couldn't find it though did see this which I have always appreciated.
23. " Tarif"
When the Saracens and Moors, in the 8th century invaded and devastated the rich and beautiful provinces of Spain, they were commanded by a general whose name was Tarif, who had but one eye (See Anquetil's Universal History) - Our Tariff must be a descendant of this infamous destroyer, and inherits his defect of having but one eye, as it can see but one interest, and in one direction."
(I found the above quote on microfilm at the Tarboro Library, but I either failed to write down the source, or there was none. Also, I failed to write down the date, but remember that it was well before the War, 1823/1833 sticks in my mind. BT)

DeleteFigs must have been much more expensive back then. Most people today outside of where figs are grown, have never had the Glorious Experience of biting into a perfectly ripened fig, methinks. Perhaps they might give a higher price for all of the Delicious Bits of God Given Rights as written within the U.S. Constitution... Perhaps today, we will see the LONG AWAITED PURIM Moment hidden within the Defenses Arsenal of Unveiled Truths, as with the Book of Esther. What if... the Gallows that they have built is for them instead? Keeping the Faith here, Brock. Tick Tock, Tick Tock, CLICK!
