A Country Store

May be an image of outdoors

A small sign on the windowpane,
Said “Closed”, they’ve moved away,
They closed the store, seems years before,
It’s seen its better day.

An “open” sign, rest on the ground,
No longer has a use,
Time and neglect, so obvious,
It suffers from abuse.

Was once a thriving, country store,
Now stands, dilapidated,
That times have changed, things rearranged,
Cannot be understated.

The main highway, six miles away,
Sells gas that’s ten cents less,
Stocks items at a lower price,
Which speaks of our progress.

But is it really progress when,
You can’t get local news,
A place to sit and chat a bit,
And hear your neighbor’s views.

Where you can charge, till payday comes,
And play a game of checkers,
Where you can buy, hand dipped Ice cream,
Perhaps a double decker.

Warm yourself, a cast iron stove,
On cold, wet, rainy days,
Tell a joke or brag a bit,
In friendly, sorts of ways.

No, once they’re gone, and they’ve moved on,
Then there won’t be no more,
Nothing else, can ‘ere replace,
That good, old, country store.

  1. I like this poem, very true, places to stop and visit and catch up on very local news are gone. A way to keep bonds and community together, gone.

  2. Thanks and I loved them. Guess there are still some around which are as before.

Occasionally, we would go from Daddy's farm Green Acres to his other one Bleak House and stop at the Delaplane Country Store for an ice, cold orange soda. Boy, did they taste good after a hard morning's work! When Dixie and I visited this day, I noticed that the lady looked familiar and I asked her if she was a McCarthy. *She replied that no she wasn't, but was related. I then mentioned that I had grown up in Marshall and my father was Dr. Townsend to which she replied that he was her doctor and had come to her house every day for two weeks to administer a shot after she had badly damaged her left arm! This alone was worth the trip. :) *Dee Mulligan

  3. I'm surprised somebody has not snatched up the old gas pump as
they are very collectible. I remember the old stores which I
took for granted as they will always be here. One would go to
a chest and pull out the soda pop, the bottles were all glass.
Delicious bacon rinds not the chemical infested ones of today.
    Thanks for the past.

    1. I remember the same and getting a glass Coke for 5 cents. Please take me back!:)

The one below is where we bought our groceries but they would delivery to us. David Glascock was a home run king around Marshall. Left hitter.

Hasn't changed much inside and is still named Glascock's grocery.

    2. Thanks. Some old stores had a couple of pin ball machines
which were 5 cents. One could get addicted.
