I have done the Richard Petty Driving Experience at Atlanta, Charlotte, and Talladega. I couldn't get to top speed at Charlotte like I could at Atlanta, there wasn't enough straightaway. I have done the drive at ATL twice where both times I was driving at 165mph average lap times with a top speed of 175. At Talladega I was 9 mph slower top speed than Atlanta but 10 mph slower lap time factoring in the lap distance but the corners were smoother at Talladega. My guess is the car was de-tuned a bit.
BTW: It costs about the same to fly to Germany and rent a Jag F-type and run the Autobahn in the unrestricted areas for a weekend.
Thanks for some interesting facts I had never heard. I went to several races in Talladega from the very early 70's till 2000. My family would camp in the infield in a Starcraft pop-up camper. I was nine and saw the wreck that killed Larry Smith. In the 90's through 2000 one of my best clients was a family of race fans from Missouri. The company I worked for would foot the bill and we'd go down on Wed. and stay through Sunday. Sometimes we'd take three motorhomes and the Missourians would bring two. My boss would buy the "front runners package". This paid for an exclusive area to park your motorhome where the track furnished garbage pick-up every day along with holding tank clean out, etc. We were allowed one tow vehicle per motorhome and could come and go through the "tunnel" anytime day or night. We also had armbands that would get us into restricted areas such as the garage and pit areas, et. It was fun times. It is to bad NASCAR has become as liberally politicized as the NBA, MLB, NFL and now some college teams who are now following suite. I no longer watch on television or attend races. Give me a local dirt track on a warm Saturday night and I'm good to go.
