More on the Scalwag Rawls.

Via Billy

Thanks to the Virginia Executive Committee of the SCV for finally taking action to remove S. Waite Rawls from the SCV for conduct unbecoming an SCV member. His continued disrespect of the Confederate flags, our Confederate veterans, and the Confederacy in general is to be condemned and he should be expelled.

I would encourage you to also look at the Board of Directors of the MOC and any other MOC leadership that has been involved in the travesty that now occurred at Appomattox. It is enough that that word represents surrender; it is too much that it should represent any shame or disrespect.

I would urge you, and the national SCV leadership, to call for a boycott of the MOC by any SCV chapters or members, and also to seek the participation of such an action by other southern organizations.

We need to also take action against the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, which now prohibits display of Confederate flags on the Confederate chapel, citing "history". It's their twisted sense of history that they invoke, since, "historically", there was no monolithic monstrosity on that property known as the VMFA, but they don't propose to demolish that building and restore the property to its original condition.

Sincerely,

Hello Scott, Thanks for your vote of approval for for the actions about to be taken against W. Rawls membership in the SCV. You may be aware CIC M.Givens has spent many hours on the phone with Rawls over their actions at the MOC. You can be certain that Cdr Givens is completely fed up with this shyster.

The Va Division will be working with him and International Hdqs. on investigation Rawls actions that reflects on the SCV. There are plenty grounds for expelling him from membership as you know. There are a couple of things we all need to keep in mind. He has friends in several camps in this state and others. He is a member of Longstreet camp and has a lot of support there. ( I was a member of Longstreet Camp at one time) He has many friends who are lawyers and likely to put up a lengthy legal battle that is sure to cost us money and reputation. Rawls is a very talented, slick used car salesman and has an answer for every question only there is no substance to his statements.

Therefore, we must proceed with clear heads and proper procedures. We want the International hdqs. to take the lead and boot him out...leaving the Va Div. to do the same. The best thing would be if Cdr. Givins could get him to voluntarily resign. Hopefully this will happen and soon. There are a lot of people totally mad at him just as you and I am. Keep the faith and we will try to keep everyone informed.

Hi, Ken, thanks for your well-informed response.
I understand the difficulties and risks of taking any action, which should not be done without due deliberation, however, the alternative is too vile to consider. I have been a member of the MOC since a previous director restored the Confederate battle flag to the museum. Since Mr. Rawls took over, the museum has been racked by controversy after controversy, beginning with the proposal to move the White House of the Confederacy and separate it from the museum. The property would have been lost forever, swallowed up by the VCU cancer now engulfing Richmond.

His SCV membership gives him a cloak of respectability to access SCV camps and carry out the poison that he spreads throughout the community. He has often said that the MOC is not to honor and commemorate, but to "study" the Confederacy, like a bug. SCV camps and SCV members need a clear message that trashing the Stephen D. Lee charge to the sons of Confederate veterans is not to be tolerated.

I think it is time for SCV leadership in Virginia and National to take on the task of trying to save the MOC for southerners. Southerners donated the items at the museum with the intent to honor and commemorate their ancestors. Now, these items are being shown along with exhibits on transvestites and slavery. Exhibits which have NOTHING to do with honoring and commemorating our ancestors and the Confederacy. This constitutes a breach of contract, and perhaps we ought to have attorneys examine this issue for possible litigation.

The most ridiculous reason I have ever heard of for NOT flying the Confederate flag is the "reunification plaza" in which, somehow, the nation is reunified WITHOUT the Confederacy. Mr. Rawls states that the Confederacy did not exist at that time, because of Lee's surrender. We all know that that isn't true. While citing "historical accuracy" (which is anything but accurate), Mr. Rawls saw fit to fly an incorrect U.S. flag and incorrect state flags in his "historically correct" reunification plaza.

I would encourage a boycott of the MOC. I would encourage investigation of any Board of Directors who are members of the SCV. The SCV NEEDS TO LEAD THE EFFORTS TO CORRECT THE AFFRONTS TO OUR HERITAGE. THERE IS NO ONE ELSE.

I would be willing to contribute to the acquisition of real estate near the MOC -Appomattox and the raising of a very large Confederate flag, preferably the Battle Flag or the Third National. I have several friends that are also willing to participate in such an effort.

Scott,
So far as I know, all members of the DEC and all present at the convention (when this was discussed) are in complete agreement with your message, It may be a few days before evidence of any action will be visible to all of us and the SCV. but, the beginning has started and our org. will work it way thru to success.

A word about the ugliness of the “reunification Promenade” from my view point. It didn’t sink in for a few days after I first heard the words and I feel sure many of us unreconstructed rebels felt the same. Most will not understand their own feeling just as I did for some time. Then as I thought about how repulsive that was to me, I realized it is an insult to all of us unreconstructed rebels. Hell no, I am not going to be “reunified” any more than I am already! (and that’s too much)! That’s clearly a deliberate political attempt to make the claim on our minds to be “unified”. It makes me sick.

It is no longer the “slippery slope” of mind control, is a full blown drop off the deep end.
It makes me think he and his minions have been drinking from Obama’s cool aid barrel...just as some did that caused the 1862 “War of Conquest”.

If I were a member of the MOC, I would quit, write a letter to the board and tell them why and demand the unused portion of the funds be returned( don’t wait for a check). If my camp were a member, I’d do the same. I am sure some members will continue their membership but the MOC will have to feel the rejection from those that resign. He would not be a speaker at our camp again either!

The Supreme Court and Obamacare by Ron Paul

Last week the Supreme Court heard arguments concerning the constitutionality of the Obamacare law, focusing on the mandate requiring every American to buy health insurance or pay fines enforced by the IRS. Hopefully the Court will strike down this abomination, but we must recognize that the federal judiciary has an abysmal record when it comes to protecting liberty. It's doubtful the entire law will be struck down. Regardless, the political left will continue its drive toward a single-payer, government run health care system.

The insurance mandate clearly exceeds the federal government's powers under the interstate commerce clause found in Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution. This is patently obvious: the power to "regulate" commerce cannot include the power to compel commerce! Those who claim otherwise simply ignore the plain meaning of the Constitution because they don't want to limit federal power in any way.

The commerce clause was intended simply to give Congress the power to regulate foreign trade, and also to prevent states from imposing tariffs on interstate goods. In Federalist Paper No. 22, Alexander Hamilton makes it clear the simple intent behind the clause was to prevent states from placing tolls or tariffs on goods as they passed through each state – a practice that had proven particularly destructive across the many principalities of the German empire.

But the Supreme Court has utterly abused the commerce clause for decades, at least since the infamous 1942 case of Wickard v. Filburn. In that instance, the Court decided that a farmer growing wheat for purely personal use still affected interstate commerce – presumably by not participating in it!

Did Trayvon Martin Referee School Fights?

On Trayvon Martin’s YouTube channel, two of the five videos posted are of teenagers boxing at his high school. There’s a tall teenager in a black and silver striped shirt who appears to be acting as a referee of sorts.

The cameraman on the first video says, “Watch out Trayvon, or I’ll slap you nigga.”

It’s too grainy to tell for sure if it’s Trayvon Martin acting as referee in the fight, but the video is uploaded to his YouTube account, and the cameraman does mention him by name.

A Righteous Insurgent

One can only hope that the threat Barack Obama made to the Supreme Court concerning their decision on Obamacare will stiffen the back of Justice Kennedy, so often the hinge upon which conservative hopes balance, leading him to vote with his intellect rather than his spine to strike down this ridiculous law.

A president, any president, who speaks about pending decisions is irresponsible. Any president who brings into question the authority of the Supreme Court by emphasizing their "unelected" status and presenting the overturning of legislation as "unprecedented" (though it is routine and in fact the only reason to take a case) and making the outrageous claim that such legislation was broadly supported in the legislature when it was barely passed and not supported by Republicans in the House at all, is a reckless liar.

This is the vulgarity of Barack Obama that I detest.

Will U.S. Troops Fire On American Citizens?

Not a doubt in my mind that some will.

Via Don

April 1, 2012

Who would believe that in the year 2012 one would have to ask if the U.S. Military would fire on American Citizen’s?

The question of troop involvement in a possible upcoming Martial Law scenario that is being predicted is no imaginary possibility – nor is it a ‘conspiracy theory’.

Other tough questions are being discussed such as, “Will the U.S. government confiscate Gold and Silver in an economic collapse?” and “Will there be a round-up of American Citizens to be put into FEMA Camps?”

Many believe that the United Nations will be given authority to step in to keep the peace in any civil unrest or economic collapse. This is a strong possibility.

Readers should be familiar with the term ‘Hidden In Plain Sight’. How this applies to the United Nations is simple.

Richard L. Johnson Gun Review: Ruger LCR

The .357 is my pocket carry with Speer LE 158 gr. GDHP.

Let me admit my bias up front: I’m a Smith & Wesson kind of guy. I’ve owned and carried many of their handguns both on and off-duty. The first handgun I ever bought was a model 10 heavy barrel that rode in a Safariland holster for more than two years before my department moved to the Glock 17.

It doesn’t mean that I don’t carry or appreciate other firearms. If you see me out and about, I’ve likely got a Glock 19 on my hip. If I am on the job, you will see a SIG SAUER P226 in the holster. But I always have a hammerless Smith on my person. Always.

When the Ruger LCR was introduced in 2009, I was intrigued. Here was a revolver being introduced at a time when the semi-auto pistol is king. Plus, going head-to-head with Smith & Wesson in the pocket revolver market was a bold move.

But, several years later, the LCR has carved out a significant niche in the market, and Ruger continues to introduce new models of the handgun to meet consumer demand. Having shot several LCR revolvers, I understand why this little gun is thriving in the current market.

LCR

The LCR, or “Lightweight Compact Revolver,” is a hammerless, snub-nose handgun. The initial LCR was available only in .38 Special (+P rated), but newer models are available in both .22 LR and .357 Magnum.

Why the nation is arming itself

Via Billy

With the shooting death of Trayvon Martin by a neighborhood watch volunteer who was legally carrying a 9-mm handgun, the familiar wail has arisen from our cultural and media elite:

America has too many guns!

“Open carry” and “concealed carry” laws should be repealed.

Florida’s “Stand-your-ground” law, replicated in two dozen states, threatens to turn America into the Tombstone of Doc Holiday and Wyatt Earp. This is insane!

The United Nations agrees. This year, the world body takes up the global control of firearms, including small arms in the hands of citizens.

According to Sen. Rand Paul, the U.N. “Small Arms Treaty” will almost surely mandate tougher licensing requirements to own a gun, require the confiscation and destruction of unauthorized civilian firearms, call for a ban on the trade, sale and private ownership of semi-automatic weapons, and create an international gun registry.

No more Colt .45s in the top drawer or M-1 rifles in the closet.

Memo to the U.N.: Lots of luck.

George Zimmerman Stepped Up for Black Homeless Beating Victim Sherman Ware, When the Black Community Ignored Ware.........

Via Occidental Dissent

My mom always says, "No good deed goes unpunished."

A relative of George Zimmerman’s, who is in hiding, sent me the following letter and the accompanying text of a January, 2011 flyer that follows it, and then gave me a lengthy telephone interview.

The relative reports having sent the letter and the flyer's text to the Baltimore and Washington, DC offices of the NAACP, black churches that have been calling for George Zimmerman’s head, Sherman Ware’s sister, Tonetta Foster, who has been denouncing Zimmerman from megaphones at the hate rallies targeting him, and many media organizations and journalists. The package went out to Pastor Holmes at the Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Tallahassee, the Allen Chapel AME Church, Eric Degganf, of CNN’s Reliable Sources and the Tampa Bay News, media critic Howard Kurtz at both the Washington Post and the Daily Beast, Megan Kelly at Fox News, The Smoking Gun, Rachel Delinsky of the Sanford Herald, columnist Michelle Malkin, and many other people and organizations. (The family member was away from a computer, and the mailing list.)

Not one of the above-named figures and organizations responded to the package. The only person who even discussed the matter with the family member was the Sanford Herald’s Rachel Delinsky, but the latter never wrote about the letter and the flyer. The only media organizations and figures to respond so far, have been Matt Drudge and The Daily Caller, earlier today.

As I copied and pasted the texts from pdfs, some irregularities carried over. I tried my best to catch them, but surely did not catch them all.

The letter:

March 26, 2012
Turner Clayton
NAACP
4805 Mount Hope Drive
Baltimore, MD 21215
Mr. Clayton,
Subject: George Zimmerman

Dear Mr Clayton

The events of February 26, 2012 are tragic and the details of which will not be disclosed until the police report is made public. Regardless of this fact, George Zimmerman has been hiding for his life because of the death threats made against him by the black community. He has been found guilty (in the public eye) until proven innocent. He has been called a racist and a bigot and there have been very few that have stood up for him. There has been an unprecedented rush to judge George regardless of the facts.

The black community as a whole has turned their backs and blindly followed the furor stirred up by selfproclaimed leaders of your community. These leaders have rallies and chant horrible things of a person they know nothing about. If justice is what the community wants don’t you think you should wait for the investigators to do their jobs first? Isn’t that justice?

The purpose of this letter of the remind you that things are not always what they seem. Sometimes tragic things happen and there are ALWAYS two sides to every story. As African‐Americans you can surely identify with that. While I am not prepared to get into the details of the investigation because I do not want to make a rush to judgment like the rest of society, I would like to point out some things that many of your followers already know. These people that I refer to have, to date, lacked the moral character and principle to do the right thing even though it may be unpopular.

You will recall the incident of the beating of the black homeless man Sherman Ware on December 4, 2010 by the son of a Sanford police officer. The beating sparked an outrage in the community but there were very few that stepped up to do anything about it. I would presume the inaction was because of the fact that he was homeless not because he was black. Do you know the individual that stepped up when no one else in the black community would? Do you know who spent tireless hours putting flyers on the cars of persons parked in the churches of the black community? Do you know who waited for the church‐goers to get out of church so that he could hand them fliers in an attempt to organize the black community against this horrible miscarriage of justice? Do you know who helped organize the City Hall meeting on January 8th , 2011 at Sanford City Hall?? That person was GEORGE ZIMMERMAN. Ironic isn’t it?

The main point for this letter is to explain to you that the black community has labeled George a racist without any investigation at all. Regardless of the fact that George personally spoke to many of your constituents, not one has stepped forward and said, Hey I know that face. That is the Hispanic guy that was standing up for Sherman Ware. That was the only non‐black face in the meetings for justice in this case. You know as well as I do that there are many NAACP followers that recognize George from the Ware case as well as many other good things that he’s done for the black community. It’s time for you to end the race issue in this matter and call for cooler heads to prevail. If something happens to George as a result of the race furor stirred up by this mischaracterization of George there will be blood on your hands as well as the rest of the racists that have rushed to judgment. You need to call off the dogs. Period. Publicly and swiftly.

You will not be the only recipient of this letter. I am going to scream as loud about this as the NAACP has against “racist” George. There will be a press release with a copy of this letter mailed to the media but I am going to give you a head‐start in doing the right thing. The actions of the NAACP on this will help the world decide whether your organization is in fact racist or if it is for the greater good of society.

I will not be providing my name because all of our family is in hiding and frankly scared by the threats from the black community. If you feel the need to respond I will see this in the media (if you do the right thing) and I will be happy to provide more details showing how wrong you really are. I will not remain anonymous after the outcome of this case is determined. There are going to be a lot of people that need to be held accountable for their rush to judgment.

BTW, I have attached herewith a copy of the flyer that was placed on your constituents cars last year that might jog the memory of your amnesia‐laden supporters.

What Happened to Liberty in the The Hunger Games Movie?

The comment that is most depressing comes first.

  1. Sadly, as a late baby boomer (b. 1962), the following is not correct based on my experiences teaching history and seeing how it is presented in textbooks. The Holocaust is played up but these other things: not at all.

“Most baby boomers have a contemporary understanding of the brutal realities and efficiencies of totalitarian states embodied in the Soviet Gulags, Chairman Mao’s Cultural Revolution, Cambodia’s killing fields, Rwanda’s tribal massacres, and the terrorism of dictators such as Uganda’s Idi Amin or Augusto Pinochet in Chile.”

    You are right about this:

“For younger generations, however, the brutal efficiency of the totalitarian state is in danger of becoming an abstraction.”

I’m teaching a course on the Great Depression and not a single student knew of Stalin and the Great Terror! Mao is a t-shirt (although beat out by Che by a long shot).

  4. VERBATIM POST

As expected, The Hunger Games blasted through doors off movie theaters last weekend, raking in $152.5 million in its opening weekend. That represents the third highest domestic box-office gross in history, trailing just behind the last Harry Potter movie and The Dark Knight. This should have been good news for liberty lovers, as I noted in an earlier post on this blog based on a review of the books. But alas, perhaps not. The pro-liberty theme, particularly the individualist element, was diluted in the movie adaptation of the books. The reasons why, and the implications for future adaptations of books with liberty themes, are important for those interested in seeing liberty play a more prominent role in popular culture, particularly movies.

Movies are a different medium than books, and storytellers have to script their characters and plots to fit the visual aesthetic of conventional film. For commercial films, this appeal has to be broad to position the film for success. Unfortunately, “idea movies” simply don’t fare well at the box office. Atlas Shrugged, for example, grossed just $5 million during its run in the US, about the same as the anti-Wall Street film Margin Call (which featured much bigger name actors). The Adjustment Bureau with Matt Damon did better, breaking $60 million. That’s respectable number, but far short of a box office hit. You get the point.

The core problem is that the trappings of commercial movie production make idea movies a hard sell. Moviegoers are brought in the theaters based on emotional conflict, not grand ideas about politics or economics. These conflicts have to be personal, not abstract. So, it’s not so much the oppression of the State that motivates Katniss in the movie as much as her promise to her sister Prim to win and come home.

In the book trilogy, Katniss Everdeen is almost Randian in her individualistic quest for liberty. Before the Reaping, her biggest source of angst is against the imperialistic oppression of the Capital District. Her relationship with her best friend Gale Hawthorne hinges on a mutual hatred and resistance to the State’s oppression of their community (District 12) as well as themselves as individuals; they aren’t reacting to the oppression of the collective as much as the constraints on their own freedoms of association and economic opportunities.

Notably, a libertarian friend’s teenage child told him she hates it when people bring politics into a discussion of The Hunger Games. For most readers and movie goers, the story is more about personal struggle and survival, not self identity, personal freedom, colonialism, or even economic tyranny even though these themes are very clear and I would argue integral to the storyline of the books. Thus, the quest for individual liberty is reduced to a survival story in the movie, motivated by a sister’s undying love and self-sacrifice. These are certainly noble values, but they fall short of the liberty-laced thoughts and actions of the books. Katniss Everdeen remains very much an individualist in the movie, but it’s her practical side of doing everything necessary to win the games that drives the plot.

This is unfortunate. Most baby boomers have a contemporary understanding of the brutal realities and efficiencies of totalitarian states embodied in the Soviet Gulags, Chairman Mao’s Cultural Revolution, Cambodia’s killing fields, Rwanda’s tribal massacres, and the terrorism of dictators such as Uganda’s Idi Amin or Augusto Pinochet in Chile. The terrorism embodied in the intentional cruelty and oppression of the Capital District is not a fantastical abstraction of something left to the stuff of science fiction. For younger generations, however, the brutal efficiency of the totalitarian state is in danger of becoming an abstraction.

Moreover, these oppressive regimes, many of which were responsible for the torture and murder of tens of millions of people, were overturned through the heroic efforts of individual leaders, making individual sacrifices, and putting higher values above risks to themselves. In short, successful resistance to collective oppression has come in the form of the Katniss Everdeens in the books, not the movie. These individuals, like the Czech Republic’s Vaclav Klaus or Poland’s Lech Walesa, were motivated by ideas.

I can only hope that the commercial success of the first movie will give the screenwriters the freedom to complete the arc of Everdeen’s character toward this more even heroic figure over the next two movies.
