Jefferson Davis, Born 3 June 1808

American Statesman, Soldier, Senator, Secretary of War, President

A West Point graduate, Davis distinguished himself in the Mexican-American War as a colonel of the Mississippi Rifles volunteer regiment, and was the United States Secretary of War under President Franklin Pierce. Both before and after his time in the Pierce Administration, he served as a US Senator from Mississippi. As senator he argued against secession but believed each State was sovereign and had an unquestionable and constitutional right to secede from the voluntary Union of the Founders, just as they had seceded from England seeking political liberty.  Davis resigned from the Senate in January 1861 after receiving word that his State of Mississippi had voted to leave the voluntary Union.  Davis explained his actions saying:

“[To] me the sovereignty of the State was paramount to the sovereignty of the Union. And I held my seat in the Senate until Mississippi seceded and called upon me to follow and defend her. Then I sorrowfully resigned the position in which my State had placed me and in which I could no longer represent her, and accepted the new work. I was on my way to Montgomery when I received, much to my regret, the message that I had been elected provisional President of the Confederate States of America.”

Davis was a great and patriotic American who tried to save the old constitutional republic from abolitionist revolutionaries, and who left the old union with the old constitution intact to form a "more perfect Union" and with the consent of the governed. He contended that he would rather be out of the Union with the Constitution than to be in the Union without the Constitution. Davis remarked in July 1864:

"I tried in all my power to avert this war. I saw it coming, and for 12 years, I worked night and day to prevent it, but I could not.  The North was mad and blind; it would not let us govern ourselves, and so the war came, and now it must go on till the last man of this generation falls in his tracks, and his children seize the musket and fight our battle, unless you acknowledge our right to self-government.

We are not fighting for slavery. We are fighting for Independence, and that, or extermination, we will have....Slavery never was an essential element.  It was the only means of bringing other conflicting elements to an earlier culmination.  It fired the musket which was already capped and loaded.  There are essential differences between the North and the South that will, however this war may end, make them two nations.”

Reminded during the war of the destruction of his Mississippi plantations by occupying Northern troops, we dismissed it as the cost of war, yet confessed that he pitied his poor Negroes, who had been driven off by those troops and abandoned to misery or ruin.  He resisted arming the slaves as they were not trained as soldiers, were needed to raise food for the armies in the field, and he would not use them as mercenaries and cannon-fodder as Lincoln was doing to avoid conscripting unwilling white Northerners.

At the end of the War, when a fellow traveler remarked that the cause of the Confederates was lost. Davis replied:

“It appears so. But the principle for which we contended is bound to reassert itself, though it may be at another time and in another form.”

We may be experiencing his prediction now in the midst of State sovereignty resolutions and 10th Amendment reaffirmations across the country. In 1881, Davis was critical of the Gilded Age corruption and ignorance of the United States Constitution and remarked:

“Of what value then are paper constitutions and oaths binding officers to their preservation, if there is not intelligence enough in the people to discern the violations; and virtue enough to resist the violators?”

Davis was guilty of no treason and demanded a fair trial in order to argue the constitutionality of the South’s actions in 1860-1861. This was denied by his tormenters, the reason was revealed by Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court, Salmon P. Chase, in 1867. Chase admitted that:

"If you bring these leaders to trial, it will condemn the North, for by the Constitution, secession is not a rebellion. His [Jefferson Davis] capture was a mistake. His trial will be a greater one. We cannot convict him of treason."

President Davis died on December 6, 1889

Black leadership group protests 'disastrous effects of illegal immigration to the black community'

The Black American Leadership Conference this morning issued an open letter calling on members of Congress to oppose the current immigration proposal, arguing increased competition for low-skill jobs would hurt Americans, particularly black Americans, struggling to find work.

"Given the fact that more than 13% of all blacks are unemployed - nearly double that of the national average, it is our position that each Member of Congress must consider the disastrous effects that Senate Bill 744 would have on low skill workers of all races, while paying particular attention to the potential harm to African Americans," reads the open letter.

Terrifying: The Moment A Drone Narrowly Misses Passenger Plane Carrying 100 People

The United States isn’t the only country that deals with its share of drone-related controversy.

Classified footage from a German drone plane shows the unmanned device just barely missing an Afghan passenger plane reportedly carrying 100 people.

Despite being strictly classified, footage of the “Luna” drone narrow made its way to YouTube and has stirred an uproar within Germany over the country’s use of drones and its Defense Minister’s reluctance to build the Luna’s successor with anti-collision technology.

Whom the Gods Would Destroy

Mike Scruggs

The Greeks had a saying, often attributed to the playwright Euripides (480-406 BC), that seems appropriate to the Schumer-Rubio amnesty and immigration surge bill, S.477, to be debated next week on the floor of the U.S. Senate:

“Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad.”

Actually, this is a paraphrase by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. A closer approximation to Euripides would be:

“Those whom God wishes to destroy, he first deprives of their senses.”

I am writing this article because I believe the Schumer-Rubio bill is extraordinarily foolish, and if passed will condemn the country to rapid economic, cultural, and political destruction.

Schumer-Rubio or the Gang-of-Eight bill will give amnesty to 11.5 million illegal immigrants and result in another 22 million other legal immigrants and guest-workers coming to the U.S. in the next ten years. Having looked at the bill and studied the 1986 Amnesty, I believe these numbers are very conservative. Senator Sessions (R, AL), the senior Republican on the Senate Finance Committee believes the bill will result in at least 50 million new immigrants within ten years. Based on my own analysis, I believe a figure of 60 million is more likely. Amnesties beget more amnesties and accelerate both legal and illegal immigration. Based on the 1986 amnesty, we could have two more illegal immigrants for every amnesty given over the first decade.

Robert Rector of the Heritage Foundation has estimated the cost of amnesty for the 11.5 unlawful immigrants would add $6.3 Trillion to our national debt of $16.5 Trillion over the next 50 years. But once amnesty is done, the political and liberal media pressure to accelerate the timetable of benefits and citizenship to newly amnestied illegals will be immense. It would have a high probability of being accelerated by court order rather than additional legislation. Both acceleration plans may be a part of the Democratic strategy even now.  So Rector’s $6.3 Trillion cost, terrible as it is, may far underestimate the extent of a national economic and fiscal train-wreck. Not just 11.5 million, but 34 to 50 or 60 million new immigrants would push the U.S. toward unthinkable inflation rates and social chaos.  Any U.S. Senator or House Member who could vote for this would certainly have been deprived of their intellectual and moral senses.

Only 4.0 million immigrants went through Ellis Island from 1890 to 1950, yet the Schumer-Rubio immigration folly bill would bring in 34 to 50 million immigrants in a single decade from 2013 to 2023. Whom the gods would destroy, they first deprive of common and moral sense!

Here are some statistics from the Heritage Foundation Report, based on 2010 BLS numbers that make our national immigration folly and fiscal irresponsibility easier to understand. The figures given are for benefits received per household versus taxes paid.  Benefits include government entitlements plus a share of services for education, law enforcement, public utilities, etc. according to National Academy of Sciences analysis standards. The Net Household Deficit for unlawful immigrants is staggering.

Unlawful Immigrants

Annual Household Benefits:   $24,721

Less Taxes Paid                                                10,344

Net Household Deficit                                   $14,387

Non-Immigrants

Annual Household Benefits:  $31,226
Less Taxes Paid                                                30,916

Net Household Deficit                                   $     310

Additional benefits for amnestied immigrants that come with legal status would amount to an irreversible and ticking fiscal time-bomb. Two-thirds of their income would have to be paid in taxes to reach the fiscal breakeven point.

The main reason for the large Net Household Deficit for unlawful immigrants seems to be education and skill level. Here is a comparison of educational levels for household heads of unlawful immigrant and non-immigrant households:

Illegals     Non-immigrants
High School not completed    51 %         10 %
High School completion         27 %         30 %
Some College                         13 %         30 %
College degree or more          10 %         31 %

In both cases, only those households headed by a person with a college degree or more paid more taxes than benefits received. Hence we cannot really afford our current level of government spending even for natives, much less for low-skilled immigrants. Yet even with 21 million Americans unable to find a full-time job, the U.S. Chamber and their allied business associations keep calling for more cheap labor. This has been going on for at least 40 years, and Congress has not had the guts to tighten the pipeline that keeps driving budget deficits higher and the wages and living standards of native-born and  naturalized American workers down.

Many politicians believe that anyone who is gainfully employed and pays taxes is a positive to the economy. Heritage Foundation’s Rector points out that these statistics prove this is far from the truth. As economist Milton Friedman warned, high immigration and high public benefits are in dramatic opposition. Amnesty would result in Social Security and Medicare going broke earlier.

Higher legal immigration and more and bigger guest-worker programs will not solve our immigration problems. Bringing in millions of immigrants with little education and low skills hurts our native-born and legal immigrant poor by driving down wages and reducing their job opportunities.

The demand for cheaper labor is not confined to lower skills. Business lobbying for and hiring of foreign job applicants is spreading like wildfire. Yet a Mckinsey Consulting survey indicates that less than half of college graduates can find a job in their major field. Even in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math fields, McKinsey found that 25 percent of graduates were in jobs that did not require a college degree.

Congress needs to help American workers and graduates and stop catering to cheap labor lobbyists.

No Republican that votes for Schumer-Rubio or its equivalent in the House should survive their next primary.

How to make a BIG bomb

Bombmaking

A former radicalized Muslim-turned-Christian is expressing alarm that jihadists are posting videos on the Internet that show how to build powerful bombs capable of bringing down buildings.

The alert comes from Walid Shoebat, a former member of the Palestine Liberation Organization who engaged in terror attacks.

“‘How to Make Massive Roadside Bombs’ – you heard it right, and forget exploding pressure cookers,” he told WND, referencing the relatively small explosives used by Muslim terrorists to kill and maim innocent bystanders at the Boston Marathon.

“As unbelievable as it sounds, Al-Jazeera TV, in collaboration with the Free Syrian Army, provided an exclusive training session on how to make an improvised explosive device,” he said.

IEDs were used extensively against U.S.-led coalition forces, causing about 63 percent of coalition deaths in Iraq, Shoebat noted.

He said the demonstration is not for “any small version IED, but the massive type that brings down large buildings and causes high death toll.”

Issa warns Holder not to take 'perjury lightly’

House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) strongly suggested that Attorney General Eric Holder perjured himself before a congressional panel investigating the Justice Department's treatment of reporters.

In an interview on CNN's "State of the Union," Issa warned Holder not to "use perjury lightly" when discussing his approval of a search warrant for the emails of Fox News reporter James Rosen.

"It's hard to have confidence in what this attorney general says or what his people say," Issa said Sunday.

The Justice Department (DOJ) is investigating Rosen for allegedly soliciting classified information from a government source.

DOJ has denied that Holder lied to the House Judiciary Committee when he said that he was never involved in the "potential prosecution of the press for the disclosure of material."

On CNN Sunday, Issa said Holder's statement would be considered a lie by the average person given his approval of a search warrant for Rosen's emails.

Luther Campbell is outraged at racists: Himself.

When rap icon Luther Campbell talks, people listen.

Campbell was a member of 2 Live Crew, a bawdy hip hip group now mainly remembered for a stint at the Supreme Court.

Well, maybe we should not give total short shrift to Mr. Campbell’s earlier artistic creations. After all, who could forget such time honored contributions to the American songbook as “Me So Horney” and “Pop That Pussy.” And don’t forget “Face down ass up.”

Now Campbell is back: “outraged at the treatment of African Americans” during Black Beach Week near his hometown of Miami.

After more than ten years of violence and chaos and mayhem and people hurt and property destroyed, Miami Beach police finally figured it out: They had to turn the town into a police state. Even so, more than 400 people got arrested over the Memorial Day weekend.

Compare with with the 20 people arrested for a bigger crowd during the same time period at the Indy 500.

Whatever.

Campbell is pissed: From a column in the Miami New Times, Campbell rails against the racists who
“racially profile people who are coming down here to have a good time.”
“It’s because there are more police on the street bent on locking people up for insignificant crimes that are ignored except during the last weekend in May.”
“All these measures are designed to make African-Americans feel uncomfortable so they don’t come back next year.”
No doubt the locals hate Black Beach Week. They say the crime, mayhem and mountains of trash ruin their town.

Far worse than any other event.

The Mayor of Miami Beach said Black Beach Week turned his town into a “war zone.”

Doug Giles of Town Hall described some of the action of year’s past:
“Yes, during this year’s festivities the Urban Beach Weekers trashed the historic Art Deco streets, screamed, yelled and blasted music 24/7, and then, of course, there’s the attempted murder of our local police. Yep, one of the ‘tourists’ tried to run over several cops with his vehicle and then shot at them, at which point a gunfight ensued between one of these winners and Miami’s cops that made anything John Yoo has produced look lame.”

NY: Mayhem in the city: 25 people shot in 48 hours

NYC PAPERS OUT. Social media use restricted to low res file max 184 x 128 pixels and 72 dpi

Gee, Nanny Bloomberg's gun control sure is working swell.........

Violence surged like the mercury Sunday, with three more fatalities from gun violence — and eight others wounded in shootings — bringing the total number of bullet-riddled in the city to 25 in less than 48 hours.

Only Staten Island was safe from the wide-ranging spray of gunfire and sickening weekend bloodshed. At least 12 people were blasted in Brooklyn, eight in the Bronx and another four in Queens. The sole person shot in Manhattan took several slugs to the chest and perished in broad daylight.

Sunday’s first fatality was Ivan Martinez, 21, who was approached around 3:25 a.m. by a 20-year-old gunman and a woman at E. 139th St. near Brook Ave. in the Bronx, police said.
The gunman shot Martinez once in the head and ran off with the woman.
