How a Teen’s Death Has Become a Political Weapon

In a beautiful morning last May, Diana Feldmann sat in her apartment in a suburb of Mainz, a prosperous city in western Germany, waiting for her fourteen-year-old daughter, Susanna, to return from a sleepover. When her phone finally lit up with a WhatsApp message, her heart leaped. “I’m in Frankfurt, taking a walk with my boyfriend Armando,” it said. “I’ll be back sometime later.”
Feldmann immediately grew suspicious. The message did not match her daughter’s usual writing style. Susanna had never mentioned somebody by the name of Armando. Nor, it soon became clear, had any of her friends heard of him. All of Feldmann’s attempts to reach her daughter were unsuccessful. That night, Susanna did not return.
A police investigation quickly identified a suspect: Ali Bashar, a twenty-one-year-old resident of a nearby shelter for refugees. The more details emerged about him, the more it looked as though the authorities had committed a remarkable string of blunders.
Bashar’s application for asylum had been rejected more than a year earlier. In the months leading up to Susanna’s death, he had allegedly pushed and spat at a policewoman, robbed a man at gunpoint, and repeatedly raped an eleven-year-old girl. Even after he was identified as a suspect in the country’s highest-profile murder case, Bashar, along with his parents and five of his siblings, managed to procure papers, board a flight to Istanbul, and return to the family’s home, in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq.

Escape From Saigon
After a swift campaign against a rapidly collapsing South Vietnamese army, North Vietnamese forces entered Saigon, the South Vietnamese capital, on April 29, 1975. With the city falling, government employees and military personnel raced to escape by foot, by car, by boat — and, in the case of pilots like Ba Van Nguyen, by helicopter.
The story of Ba’s escape with his family is told at the end of Rory Kennedy’s Oscar-nominated documentary “Last Days in Vietnam,” which PBS produced as part of its American Experience series. Recently, WGBH, the PBS member station in Boston, commissioned the artist Eoin Coveney to retell Ba’s tale in graphic form.

My Drive to Dixieland what I learned Part 2: Family
Funny that I should attempt to write any kind of article regarding family, at 44 I don't have kids or a family. My views of family and my outlook are based upon the observations of my siblings, my many cousins, aunts, and uncles. In terms of what I do and accomplish in my life I'd be damn proud to accomplish near half of what any of my relatives have. I have always had a vast pride for my family and it's heritage, which for the most part remained hidden from my family. Being the runt of the litter (and usually having the largest, quickest mouth) meant I was usually using any communication skills to raise hell by sharing my quickly spoken silver tongued opinions. I am admittedly the black sheep of the family, I strive and work to achieve being nearly as nice as the families I am from and related to.
My time and the drive through Dixieland was truly educational, historic, and emotional. I realized returning home that I wouldn't be able to describe the trip in a single article. I dearly hope these articles reflect the absolutely spectacular hospitality I enjoyed, the terrific Southerners I encountered, and successfully portrays the effect it had on me. I had little idea of why it was so important to go just that I needed to do it. I understood the historical significance afterwards.

Covington Kids Going To The White House
On Tuesday, Nick Sandmann, the student from Covington Catholic High school who was at the center of the controversy with Native American Nathan Phillips last Friday near the Lincoln Memorial, confirmed to The Daily Wire that the White House has reached out to host the students. Sandmann said, "The President wants to send a plane down to get us."
