"WARRENTON, VA – On Sunday, 27 March 2011, the Memorial Foundation of the Germanna Colonies will present a special speakers program and retrospective on General Robert Edward Lee in observance of the Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War.
Robert E. Lee was a descendant of Governor Alexander Spotswood, the patron of German colonists who settled in 1714 at Germanna and then at Germantown in Fauquier County.
This event is part of the Germanna Foundation's commitment to public education efforts on the Germanna-related heritage of Fauquier County.
The afternoon program will feature lectures by two noted Lee historians and will be followed by a question-and-answer panel discussion. The program will held at the John Barton Payne Building, located at 2 Courthouse Square, on Main Street, in Old Town Warrenton, Virginia beginning at 2:00 PM and admission is free to the public.
About the Speakers: The first speaker is a noted author in the Washington Times Civil War Page and the Civil War Courier, Mr. William Connery. His topic will cover General Robert E. Lee from April 1865 until his death in October 1870. Lee was a brilliant military commander and strategist bringing to a small town in western Virginia those skills, as well as his ability to work with and engender respect from a wide assortment of people.
The second speaker, Mr. Gar Schulin, serves on the Board of Directors of The Thomas Jefferson Heritage Society, and is a Past President of the Virginia Society Sons of the American Revolution, Culpeper Minute Men Chapter. Mr. Schulin is also an officer with the Virginia Division Sons of Confederate Veterans, Black Horse Camp #780; and is actively affiliated with the Abbeville Institute, the Dwight D. Eisenhower Foundation, the National Air and Space Society and the Fauquier Heritage Institute. Mr. Schulin's slide presentation, "Lee The American," will provide an insightful discussion of the great character of Robert Edward Lee, and a historical review of how America and the world has paid the very highest tributes to General Lee, including first-hand accounts and recollections of those who knew him in life. Mr. Schulin lives in Warrenton.
