When U.S. forces overtook Fort Fisher in January 1865, they captured the flag flying above the fort. That Confederate 2nd National pattern flag, more than 11 feet wide, was made by local women in the 1860s. The flag traveled north, where it was discovered in the New York home of a private collector. It was given to the City of Wilmington in 1934.

The flag received professional conservation, including, hand vacuuming to remove surface dirt; wet cleaning to reduce the appearance of stains and patching with sheer polyester fabric. Over 42 patches were needed to stabilize the flag.
