I really enjoyed watching that. But, of all the variety of aircraft shown in the video, I did NOT see any of the Air America Pilatus PC-3 "Porter" planes, which I used to see when I stationed at the Phu Lam Signal Battalion.Ah, the memories!
Was that the Bird Dog?
Google "Air America Porter" and you'll see all sorts of web sites about the Pilatus PC-3 Porter. It is a STOL manufactured in Switzerland, and is not legal to operate in the United States.I don't know why the FAA refused to license that aircraft. It's kind of like a Bird Dog, but much larger, with a powerful engine and capacious cargo area. The nose is quite long, and the tail looks like a sheet of plywood standing straight up.I think the plane was used in the movie, "AIR AMERICA".When flying missions into Laos, it would make impossible landings and takeoffs in unbelievably small clearings on the sides and/or tops of mountains.
Thanks. I took a hop from TSN to Bien Hoa in a Bird Dog and the pilot showed me how quickly he could stop it once the wheels touched. Astounding! You'll appreciate the links in the post below. I get sad every time I see a VNAF Skyraider.South Vietnamese Air Force A-1E (AD-5) Skyraiderhttp://www.namsouth.com/viewtopic.php?t=2316&highlight=bird+dog
