Near MOUNT PISGAH, N.C. — At a spot 5,000 feet above sea level and 20 miles from the nearest town, an innkeeper decided Friday to defy the federal government and reopen his lodge.

That stand lasted about two hours as National Park Service rangers blocked the entrances to the privately run Pisgah Inn on the Blue Ridge Parkway after owner Bruce O'Connell decided to reopen his dining room, gift shop and country store at noon Friday for lunch. The federal government had forced the inn, in a leased building on federal land, to shut down at 6 p.m. ET Thursday at the height of fall foliage — and tourism — season.

  1. these situations are where our sheriffs should be stepping in and asserting the 10th
amendment rights of the people. I guess in this case the land and the road
are federally owned but I read that the feds blocked a state highway in South Dakota
to keep people away from Mt. Rushmore.

  2. The time is now to defy these senseless and petulant actions. I wish I were closer to Washington; I would be there October 13 to stand against these childish orders. I know the lame stream media covers none of this, I just hope enough people are reading alternative information sites to wake up the country. It is time to overwhelm the system with peaceful protests. We do not need one or ten people bypassing the barricades but hundreds and thousands. When the police come to shoo them away they simply sit down and lock arms refusing to leave. Not just one monument but dozens people ignore the cones and fill every scenic overlook with thousands of cars and people. This is OUR country the government works for us not the other way around. People it is time to…

    1. We don't want to get tricked into initiating violence as the Tyrant did at Ft. Sumter.

  4. The NPS has really given themselves a black eye in this whole episode. I'm afraid I'll never consider them anything other than tools of the oppressor from now on. I'd hoped that they would have had more backbone.

    1. You should read about the shenanigans of the NPS on the OBX. refusing to remove standing water from the NPS campground despite complaints from locals about mosquitoes because the water might be "contaminated". Constantly closing the beaches for miles around a few plover nests, etc. One could be forgiven for concluding that they want people off the islands.

As for the current shutdown, my question is if they don't have the funds to patrol it to keep it open, how do they have the funds to patrol it to keep it closed?

  6. Lets see, why is it that the NPS can field JBTs everywhere to inconvience citizens? There is no budget, and there has not been one for years. Why don't they vote to de fund NPS, and send them all home? Could it be that this is theater?

    1. Send home half of the civil servants and the work would still get accomplished. Simply ask, who wants to do double the work and who wants to look for another job?

  7. I'm wondering what is going to happen when hunting season opens up.
Between Brocks home and mine is a huge national forest that allows
hunting on what they designate as "game lands". If the shut down is
still going on when hunting season opens up, I'm wondering if the feds
will shut down the forest roads. There is hunting on federal lands in
lots of places in this country. They want a confrontation. How better to get
one than men armed for hunting with high powered rifles and shotguns.
