Stock street cars. Before Ford got with it, Chevy had the 396 (Chevelle), 427 (Vette), 350 (Camaro Z28) long before. When ford had a 302 something Torino. Don't forget the GTO by Pontiac either! 3 deuces.
Ford had a 427 in 1963. The GTO came with a 4 barrel rated at 325 and 3 deuces rated at 360. I could beat the 4 speed and auto 325 with by Ford H-Po 4 speed, but not the 4 speed 360. All 3 manufacturers were competitive in 1965. The 426 hemis were good with a 4 speed, but not with an auto. A 65' 289 Cobra was the fattest thing I had ever ridden in at that time. There was only .2 difference between the 289 and 427 Cobras in 0 m- 60.
Until then, they couldn't compete with Chevrolet.
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm not sure what classes you are talking about, because it is certainy not true in all. :)

DeleteThey man that invented the Shelby lives about 15 miles from here today. Yes, he's still alive!
ReplyDeleteI assume you mean the AC Cobra as Carroll Shelby died in 2012 unfortunately.
