The 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 occupies an interesting place in the muscle car milieu. It was a homologation specially designed to legitimize another Ford, the Torino, for NASCAR competition using the new “semi-hemi” 429 CI racing engine.
The 429 was a serious powerplant: cross-bolted 4-bolt main bearing journals, a forged steel crank and connecting rods, staggered-valve aluminum heads with cavernous porting, a Ram Air-fed 735 CFM Holley 4-barrel carburetor on an aluminum high-rise intake and free-flowing exhaust manifolds. The Boss 429 package added $1,200 to the Mustang’s price and included a 4-speed and 3.91:1 Traction-Lok rear end, Deluxe Décor interior, power steering and front disc brakes. Sold new at Tauder Ford in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, this 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 Fastback is one of the first 279 built, denoting its code 820-S 429/*375 HP “Semi-Hemi” engine.
