The Charleston County Council is waiting to hear from the South Carolina Attorney General's Office before deciding whether to withhold funding from the Citadel.
The decision is based on a Confederate flag hanging in the school chapel.
Councilman Henry Darby says concerned constituents urged him to do something when they noticed the flag. He originally threatened to withhold $1 million dollars in funding.
The Citadel says the state's Heritage Act protects the flag.
"I would tend to think they would find that given previous decisions, this would come under this Heritage Protection Act and it would be protected," said former State Attorney General Charlie Condon.
The Citadel says the flag is a memorial for Citadel cadets who died in the Civil War.

Screw the Councilman. They need to send him home. To be with the Lord.
ReplyDeleteThey might not make it there, though. :)
DeleteWe are quickly losing the understanding of the "consent of the governed." Decisions are being made by a few "favored" groups and their decisions are being validated by a government and judiciary supposedly "chosen" by the people - whether the people agree or not. If the flag is a problem to some historically ignorant person (and I will limit that person's ignorance to history though in the past it would seem to be a general matter with such whiners!) then the matter should be brought to the People in a referendum and let THEM decide. If the People vote to remove the flag, then that is their will. If they vote to retain it, then the matter should be CLOSED no matter WHO is "offended." A lot of things offend me, but I realize that my fellow citizens ALSO have rights. Apparently, that is a particularly one sided point of view
ReplyDeleteWell said, as usual, Lady Val.
