CBM: Over The Rainbow - Band of Oz

Band of Oz has been making Beach Music special since the mid '60. Here I have shared two versions of Over the Rainbow to show how they have evolved yet remained constant for the past 45+ years.

  1. Love the Band of Oz. I've seen them perform many times.

I didn't realize Izzy had died. I first became aware of him on one of my trips to
Hawaii 8 or 10 years ago and remember thinking two thoughts about him.
Incredible talent and he won't live long as big as he is.

The Embers used to do an up tempo version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow but I can't find it on YouTube. Maybe they never recorded it or maybe it is in one of their medleys and they call it something else but I particularly like their version. They also did a killer version of the Chi-lites song.. Have You Seen Her. In fact the first time I ever heard Have You Seen Her, it was performed by the Embers in a club called "The Attic" in Greenville, NC. After the song the band took a break. I was standing near the stage and asked Jackie Gore.. "where did you get that song?". He was as excited as I was as he told me how they had heard it on a "black" radio station in Raleigh. Before for long, of course, the Chi-Lites were well know everywhere and not just on "black" stations.

While I'm reminiscing, this is a song that fits very well into the Beach Music genre but
was not widely known. It's one of my all time favorite love ballads.

Neat and my Dixieland is only about 30 minutes from there. "The Attic" for some reason reminds me of this one which you should enjoy.

    2. Never made it to the Mosque. I did go to some club in downtown Richmond
one night in the early 70's. Everything was as peaceful as could be except when we were leaving a couple was walking across the street and a guy in a relatively new Thunderbird tried to run them down. I suppose it was a jealous ex-boyfriend of the young lady. The guy jumped to the sidewalk and snatched the girl by the arm. Her feet were literally off the ground as if she were flying when the fender of the T-bird passed beneath them. It didn't hit her, She was unhurt. As far as I know, no one called the law.

The Attic and the other clubs in Greenville were about half an hour from where I grew up in the west end of Craven Co. but 30 minutes in the opposite direction from your place. CH
