Balancing heritage with changing times, YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly has changed the name of its iconic Robert E. Lee Hall to a name derived from the word its founder uttered when he first saw this forested acreage near Black Mountain over a century ago.

In October, YMCA Blue Ridge’s board voted to change the name of Lee Hall to Eureka Hall. The decision weighed the “almost hallowed ground” that Lee Hall occupies in the assembly’s history against “the realization that the world is changing,” said Kurt Eckel, Blue Ridge’s president and CEO.

“Heritage is very, very important, and preserving that heritage is important,” Eckel said. But changing the name of the hall “is about who we are as an organization. And if a name on a building makes some we serve feel less than welcome, then taking the name down is the right thing to do. That was the board’s decision.”

  1. Just another blow below the belt. I can see why Southerners dont like us yankees. The war has never really ended. All the pc jerks and liberal namby pambys keep trying to emasculate the South by stripping away Southern history. Even though Im a yankee I empathize with the South. Heres an idea- Dont patronize the YMCA. Dont patronize bussinesses that suport them. Cut their purse strings any way you can.

  2. It seems to me the intent of those who wish to remove historical land marks, wish to remove history. This scares me because people who want to remove evidence of the past also will remove any chance for our future.

  3. "Changing times".... Out with the old in with the new!
Absolutely not, when it comes to our heritage! A hall named after a moral and righteous man, a humble man.... That offends someone, makes them feel "less than welcome"?? Eff'em!! Eff Eckel, the "board", and the one person who didn't feel welcome!!
Damn, this s*it pisses me off!
No wonder all branches of the government wipe their collective ass's with the Constitution/BOR on a daily basis... Heritage is important, but people of America - "times a changing" we need to move "forward" in the new obama America! Remember what Barry's wife told America in the run-up to the first election of her husband... "we have to change our history, change our traditions".
In obama's America, white ain't right, and he and his ilk have set about eradicating the history and traditions of the last 200 + years. (Their gonna keep pushing, until we come out swinging).

Absolutely. Obama, an unmitigated disaster to these united states.

  4. Eckel should be horse whipped. Then tarred and feathered. If he survives, perhaps he will learn not to lie his way through his dishonorable acts.

  5. Tactics such as this makes one hate that immoral race even more. They never
earned anything in their lifetimes, except for a very few. Defame a honest, decent,
honorable man for the whims of ticks and fleas. Despicable.

Well, CHANGING the name makes ME feel less than welcome. So then wouldn't the right thing be to leave it up? What about MY feelings? Just too bizarre, the no-common-sense, progressive hypocrisy is a cancer that just won't stop until it eats every living cell of the real United States of America.

How long will it be before they change YMCA to the Young Marxists & Communists Association. I pray I'm dead and gone by then.

  7. “the realization that the world is changing” said Kurt Eckel.

Yes, Kurt, indeed it is.... getting more upside-down and insane every day. And you have now made Blue Ridge a part of this circus with this knee-jerk, white-apologetic kowtowing that victimizes the many for fear of victimizing the few. My Blue Ridge memories past will remain. Sadly, Blue Ridge going forward, is forever.... CHANGED!

Thanks, Kurt. Just proud my ancestors had the balls to put their fears aside to fight -- and die -- for what is right. How far we've fallen when the fearless become the ball-less.
