"Congress cannot simply rewrite history and strip the Confederate flag from existence," Mississippi Rep. Steven Pallazzo said in a statement. "Members of Congress from New York and California cannot wipe away 150 years of Southern history with sleight-of-hand tactics. I will fight to ensure that this language is not included in any bill signed into law."
A chorus of boos and cries of "vote! vote!" erupted in the U.S. House Thursday following a contentious day of hearings related to the Confederate flag.

The uproar came after a resolution was introduced that would have removed the Mississippi state flag, which includes the Confederate banner, from the House side of the Capitol. Instead of putting the matter to a vote, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., referred the matter to a committee.

That move prompted Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., to call for a vote. The House then voted 238-176, largely along party lines, with McCarthy, effectively ending debate on the topic.
