“When the Yankees Come – North Carolina Slaves Remember Sherman.” Author Paul C. Graham.
A 5PM artillery salute to North Carolina veterans will close the day’s events.
The event is sponsored by the Scotland County Tourism Development Commission, Scotland County Historical Properties Commission, the Cape Fear Historical Institute, the Sons of Mars NC SCV Camp, and the Scotland County Genealogical Society.

DeleteHi Brock, Yes, actually the German Palatines arrived about this time in 1710 in New Bern with John Lawson. Of the estimated 650 that left London in January only about half survived the thirteen week voyage. In Sept/Oct of 1710, about 100 Swiss and a few French Huguenots came with Christopher de Graffenried. There was no loss of life and one child is noted as being born at sea. We had a event here in New Bern in 2010 to commemorate them. My known German Palatine lines are Mueller/Miller and Franck families. My Swiss line are the Isler family. There are probably others. If my memory serves me either Jacob Mueller/Miller of John Martin Franck, Sr. took in several of the orphan children from the Tuscarora War one of whom was your Michael Koonce. We have hosted him a few times here in New Bern and also in 2012 at the Fort Barnwell site. Have you been there? It is privately owned, but we know the family and they have been great about letting interested folks visit. If you haven't, we would be glad to set up a time for you to visit. Wow! Thanks and we've got to get together. My birth name was William Brock Koonce,Jr, but my Mother, Emily didn't like the practice of Big Bill and Little Bill so always called me Brock. She died when I was 13 months old. I lived with my Koonce grandparents until I was 5 and then my Aunt Elen Douglas, who I call Mother,adopted me and changed the name to Townsend before I enlisted in the Army. Brock comes from my Great, Great Grandmother, Barbara Ann Brock! We's cousins X 2! I found George Senior's family graveyard if you ever want to go. The place of the killings is a beautiful place to picnic,camp or fish. I'll find some pictures.
ReplyDeleteHey Brock, In my files, I have a William B. Koonce born about 1923 son of Benjamin William Koonce (1897-1960) and Alice L. Taylor (~1899-~1976) in my files. Is this your William B. Koonce? Do you know Dennis Jones of Richlands, Onslow County? He is also a Koonce descendant and is one of the three authors of the Jones Co. Cemetery books. I am not a Koonce descendant of which I know, but have several Koonce connections. I feel there has been and are close connections between the early families and their descendants. When Christ Church in New Bern burned in the early 1800s all the marriages, births, and burials in the vestry books from 1715 until then were destroyed so there are probably more inter-connections between the early families than we know. P. S. I have never been to the Koonce Family Cemetery and would be glad to go see it. May see if I can round up some of the Koonce and related cousins to see if they would like to join us if that is ok with you.
