  2. I may not be a rebel by birth but I am one by temperament. My grandfathers came to America in 1881 and 1884, my grandmothers in 1888 and 1890, all from Germany. My parents, aunts and uncles were all first generation American. I can remember asking my grandfather to teach me German, as a child. He could not. Once they arrived in America him, his brothers and sisters were all forbidden to ever speak German. They were to be Americans and there was a beating if their parents heard them speak German.
