Trump's new NSA, HR McMaster, said military-industrial complex & its think-tank-servants pose "greatest threat" yet

“The future course of war doesn't depend on what you like to do,” Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster says. “It depends on enemy initiatives and enemy reactions.” HOWARD ALTMAN/STAFF

  1. I no longer have any confidence in this guy. He just proved he is an idiot. The Military buys stuff. Get over it. And the cost of new procurements is a tiny fraction of the defense budget. We spend most of our money on personnel. Finally, the military has its own think tanks. They aren't funded by anyone except the taxpayers. And the generals in the military ignore them all the time. It is normal for generals to ignore think tank reports that disagree with what generals want.

The real problem with the military is that the Army alone had over 400 active generals and every one of them believes he is personally the most important person on the planet. It's all about ego.

  2. I rather liked McMaster's comments. I don't know what percent is spent on personnel admittedly.

It does appear to me that much is wasted in military spending. We have a relatively small military compared with China with regard to troop numbers, yet we spend vastly more. China and Russia appear to do much more with what they spend, so I'd assumed a great deal is wasted.

And none of the military conflicts have been necessary. So, part of the motive for conflict seems to be the desire to spend money. Likewise, we hate Russia in part because Russia justifies NATO military spending.

The Neocons do indeed have many thinktanks. And I know in at least other industries, it's common to see "studies" which come to the "right conclusions". My statistics teacher in college even gave us an example of how he was asked to do a study, came to the wrong conclusion, asked to redo it, again came to the wrong conclusion. Finally, another guy was asked to do the study; he came to the right conclusion. And the last guy's study was the one published.

I don't care to look into the numbers, but I'd assumed the US military to be extremely wasteful.

Americans seem to prefer welfare over the American empire. And as Ron Paul said in 2012, we must choose one or the other. We can't afford both.

I think we have corporate welfare though in a variety of ways. And one of those ways is via military spending.

If personnel are such an expense, then perhaps we should cut personnel numbers. Spending cuts are a good thing.
