How to Choose the Perfect Survival Knife

Editor’s note: This is a guest post from Creek Stewart of Willow Haven Outdoor.

I don’t remember my first kiss or even who it was with. I can barely recollect getting my license to drive. I vaguely remember my high school graduation and my entire time spent at college is a blur.

However, I remember exactly where I was, what I was wearing, and how I felt when I got my first survival knife over 20 years ago. Just thinking about it brings back some of my fondest childhood memories. It was the RAMBO knife with the hollow handle that housed a little fishing kit along with a few other miscellaneous items. My love affair with knives began at a young age, and I’ve been hooked ever since. Movies seem to always have the coolest survival knives, but does the survival knife really have a place in the “real world?”

That was a rhetorical question. Yes, it most certainly does.

  1. At least 50 years ago. My Boy Scout knife. The original survival knife.

  2. My 1st pocket knife was an inexpensive Imperial 'shell' synthetic pearl covers pocket knife. Clip, spey and pen blades. I might still have it, somewhere. My 1st sheath knife was a Western, probably a 628, a trout-bird pattern. Loved that knife and have no idea where it went to either.

My 1st true 'survival knife' is something sort of special. An ALCAS 'The Solution', a knife with revolving handle that converts from knife to hatchet - draw knife configuration. Has a empty tube steel w/ O ring compartment above the hatchet blade. Very hard to describe with words - internet search the company and name and you will easily find a picture of it. Bulky as all get out.

    1. Nothing cheap in their line that's for sure. How is the one you just purchased?

  5. A little stiff on opening, but it is working out better as I work with it. It was not as sharp as I would have liked, but, since I have a Lansky sharpening kit with diamond stones, it slicked up real well.

    Overall, I like.

Looks good and I see their deluxe one is about $65. Is that what you have>
