So he has ramped up the manufacture of ammo cutting off the supply of primers outside of his company. This hurts small ammo manufacturers, re-manufacturers, and re-loaders.
I have a 4 or 5 year supply of primers and I have not purchased a standard small rifle or small pistol primer in 5 years. I will be buying something other than CCI when the supply comes back. I shot about 12k pistol and 1k of rifle rounds year before last. I shot a third of that this past year. I am shooting just enough to maintain my skill level. If I take two months off my abilities drop and it takes 3 or 4 months to get back to where I was.
He's making a business decision....one he is entitled to make. People think that the industry can magically increase output....it's not that simple. The entire US Ammo industry manufactures roughly ten billion rounds of ammo per year. That equates to an average of about 30 rounds PER PERSON. Even if only one person in ten wants ammo that's only 300 rounds per year...not a lot. During WWII the USA only produced AT THE PEAK about 21 billion rounds per year. And most of that production capacity went bye bye when the war ended. So we are actually lucky to have about half that capacity still operating. I don't see the ammo companies expanding capacity because that's a risky investment. It would take years to earn back the money invested and right now ANYTHING could happen....especially if the left outright bans the sale of ammo to citizens, which is VERY possible. So the industry will continue as it has....doing the best it can. The problem is the PANIC BUYING....just like it was with TP being scarce a year ago. ALL the smart people have all they need and often more than they need. Some of us started getting ready for this 30 years ago.
The primer situation is perplexing. In my unofficial survey and observations, I wonder if some ammo is even making it to the shelves, is it going elsewhere between distribution and retail? I'm trying to teach some younger guys about reloading and shooting skills. They have the desire and want to, but the components and loaded ammo isn't there. Primers, all they need is primers to complete the reload chain.
