Tasty Crab House, Rocky Mount, NC

  1. I don't see any crab cake. Boo!

When on the Outer Banks in 2003 for the Centennial of Flight festivities, I traipsed up and down the OB tasting the crab cakes at various restaurants.

    1. I remember in NC and in FL catching blue crab with a chicken bone tied to some kite string. I'd hurl the bone as far into the water as I could. Then when I felt a tug - or in clear water, see the crab - I would pull the chicken bone a bit nearer to me. When close enough I would put a hand held hoop net down to snatch up the crab. It was a fun way to catch a meal.

    2. Yes and quite often they would not let go until you grabbed them by hand.

  2. A recent trend I have seen is in-land seafood restaurants popping up with Southern seafood, Low-country seafood, Cajun seafood, multi-flavored wings, and fried rice with egg roles. Most are Korean owned and they do a good job.

Atlanta in notorious for killing good seafood restaurants. Fresh seafood is trucked or flown in but everything but Red Lobster usually dies in 3 to 4 years. These strip mall, Korean seafood restaurants started popping up about 4 or 5 years ago. I have seen a lot fail and I have 3 that I am frequenting right now.

BTW: I grew up near the coast in south Georgia. I appreciate good seafood and can put on a good low-country boil.

    1. Thanks and if I went to this one, I believe I'd get the Crawdads. The cheapest of the bunch!

  3. When I was a kid in lowcountry South Carolina, steamed oysters were $5.00 per person for all you could eat. They used a round table with a hole in the middle.

The tub full of oysters went on top of the table, with an empty tub going underneath the hole.
As long as you were eating, they'd keep swapping out the tubs.

Of course, $5.00 then was like $50.00 or $75.00 today, but you don't get nearly as good a deal.
