Revolutionary Jacobins: French and American

Image result for Living the Jacobin Dream, Thomas Fleming, Chronicles

“In 1793, the Jacobins, surfing the wave of Parisian mob violence, intimidated their less resolute colleagues into eliminating both the principle of monarchy and the existence of its politically superfluous incarnation, Louis XVI. Not content with killing a living king, and pronouncing a death sentence in absentia on all princes of the blood who had escaped with their lives, the revolutionaries were determined to rewrite the past by abolishing the enduring symbols of the French nation. Walter Scott, in his Life of Napoleon Bonaparte observes:

“The name of king being pronounced detestable, all the remembrances of royalty were to be destroyed . . . the royal sepulchers . . . were not only defaced on the outside, but utterly broken down, the bodies exposed, the bones dispersed . . .”

Notre Dame’s “gallery of Judean kings” [was] destroyed (the mob supposedly mistook the 28 statues for portraits of French kings).

The revolutionaries wanted to make the past, even more than the future, a tabula rasa on which they can scrawl their puerile obscenities. Even the calendar had to be reinvented. The Jacobins . . . took only a few months before adopting a system that was as “rational” (i.e., inhuman) as it was stupid . . . All over Paris and throughout France, the churches’ precious art treasures were vandalized, and gold and silver communion vessels were stolen and used in mock ceremonies that travestied the Mass.

We must always remind ourselves that the entirely sordid activities of the French Republicans were the fulfillment of the Enlightenment project, whose objects were freedom of thought (that is, the freedom to be a servile follower of the Encyclopedists), social and political equality (the destruction of all authority), and a society based solely upon reason (the destruction of Christian civilization).

And what of Americans, so eager to escape the shackles of their history that they, too, have rewritten both calendar and curriculum?

America, where Martin Luther King, Jr. and his civil-rights “revolution” takes precedent in the calendar over Washington, Adams, Jefferson, and even Lincoln; where Christian symbols are removed from schools and public squares and “Happy Holidays” has replaced “Merry Christmas”. . . where some State legislatures have removed the fine old flag under which brave Americans from the South fought in what they and many non-Southern Americans regarded as the noble cause of constitutional liberty . . .”

What can be said of this America, if not that, over the course of 150 years, we have gradually achieved the revolution which Rousseau imagined and for which Jacobins and Marxists fought and slaughtered?

The way back – if there is to be a way back – will not begin with a counter-revolution that will commemorate its own set of uprisings, heroes, and martyrs but with a quiet determination to restore the Christian calendar in our own lives; to display Christian symbols in our homes, shops and offices; and to teach our children and friends the stories and traditions that the Jacobins have done their best to destroy.”

Recovering Authentic (Politically Incorrect) Conservatism

A review of Writing on the Southern Front: Authentic Conservatism For Our Times (Routledge, 2017) by Joseph Scotchie

Joe Scotchie’s recently published anthology Writing on the Southern Front: Authentic Conservatism For Our Times made me aware of the task that confronts every serious student of the Right—recovering what otherwise might slip down the Memory Hole. Both the American media and, more generally, American political culture have moved so far away from anything that looks even vaguely non-Left that we may soon need archeologists to rediscover what has been driven underground. American “conservatism” (yes the scare quotes here are very deliberate) is now represented by Jonah Goldberg, telling us how frighteningly homophobic, racist, anti-Semitic and sexist the 1950s were and Rich Lowry calling for the removal of all statues of Robert E. Lee, since they may offend American blacks. It is therefore comforting to read Scotchie’s latest effort to revive and defend an “authentic conservatism.”

I was a kid in the '40's.......

.....I still have a LOT of memories of those days. A lot.  I remember the service flags in the window of my Grandpa's house. I remember the Troop Trains, I remember the ration cards and gas stamps.  I remember uniforms everywhere, literally.  Grandpa was an Air Raid Warden.  We still had his old steel helmet and whistle from those days for the longest time.  I remember the Victory Garden and Scrap Drives. I remember bringing pennies to school so we could buy War Bonds.

I remember that I walked to St Joseph's School, about 16 blocks, I think. Along the way, I passed a few storefront businesses - a photographer's shop; a Tailor shop and a drug store.  The Tailor was a little Jewish guy from Poland. They lived in the back of the shop with a blanket separating 'home' and business.  He was not a dry cleaner or anything but an honest to God tailor.  He could make you a suit from scratch.  Back then, men and boys went to the Tailor, women and girls to the Seamstress.  Often it was the same shop.  Most usually, he turned your uncles' clothes into your clothes, while his wife did the same for your aunts.  We had six men and four women and stuff got passed down until it became a vest or a tie.  I know he made blouses for my aunts from my uncles shirts, and so on.

Now we can begin to see the point of this reminiscence . . . Mr - - - - - - Sky was an immigrant.  He brought his trade with him, as did his wife.  They taught their kids their trades.  There was no welfare, no 'gimmedats'.  I have no idea how they made it to the States, but I know that established Jews funded a lot of small businesses to give their fellows a start in this new country.  Italians operated in a similar vein.  NOBODY got a free ride.  Everybody paid his dues.  If you didn't have a trade, they apprenticed you to somebody to learn one.  And no, you didn't get much choice.

How the Hell does this country survive, taking in  M I L L I O N S  of freeloaders, with no intention of learning a trade or working at anything, but their grift and hustle.  How in the Hell does 40% support 60% for life, without help?  We don't. Period.  And, amigo, our 40% is fading fast.  We're importing 80 IQ people in a 120 IQ economy . . . untrainable morons fit only to be thugs and thieves.  You cannot take a mutt with no aptitude to learn and'teach' him doodley.  He's gonna stay a turnip, no matter how much you spend, or whose heart it breaks.  And, buttercup, He don't give a shit!

The Daily Caller Defends Sharia Law: It’s “As American As Apple Pie”

In a newly published article, Daily Caller Deputy Editor J. Arthur Bloom uses entirely economic arguments to claim that Sharia Law is “as American as apple pie.”

Bloom first points out the fact that under Sharia Law, the practice of profiting off of lending money (collecting interest) is a sinful activity.

“Let’s start with a basic outline of Islamic finance. Islamic finance is not too different from most moralistic approaches to finance. It views money as a neutral mediator of transactions. For that reason, it views the ability to acquire more money by simply lending money (riba, in Islamic parlance) as a barren and hence sinful activity – it is proclaimed haram (prohibited) under Sharia law.”

NOTRE DAME: Some thoughts

The timing – Holy Week – is just “too pat” for this to be accidental (let alone early reports there were two ignition sites, still uncorroborated as far as I know).

What a loss.  Even though I’m not a Christian, Notre Dame stands as - literally - a towering testament to the creativity, hard work, and inspiration of Western Civilization and European peoples.  Meanwhile, churches across France are being vandalized and the authorities whistle past the open grave of their nation, culture, and ethnic people.

I keep asking this over and over: what, WHAT, WHAT could have such a hold over so many that nobody in power stands up?  It can’t be money; at some point someone in France, in Germany, in the UK, in Sweden would stand up to say “I cannot remain silent” and spill the beans out of love of country.  Is it death threats?  Aliens?  What-what-what is my cry from my heart!  Western Civilization is the greatest civilization to have ever existed on the planet, and it is under siege from both without and within.

Notre Dame Alarm Raised 23 Minutes Before Blaze Was Detected

Via Billy

An alarm was raised at Notre Dame at 6:20 p.m. on Monday night—23 minutes before the structure was engulfed in flames—but officials found no sign of a fire.

Firefighters who responded to a second alert raced to the scene but were unable to tame an inferno that ripped through the 12th century cathedral for the next 9 hours.

Paris public prosecutor Rémy Heitz announced on Tuesday that a full investigation would uncover how a massive fire was allowed to gut the cathedral.

The Fake Charge Against Julian Assange Proves That the US Government Has No Integrity

“If Julian Assange is criminalized and incarcerated for revealing the truth about what our rulers are doing, have done, then you might as well deliver yourself behind those walls, you might as well volunteer for a prison cell yourself, because you’ll no longer be free, and you’ll never be free again.”
George Galloway

Let’s be sure that we understand that Assange is not charged with anything related to Russia or Russiagate or even with breaking a law. Assange is charged with being in a conspiracy with Manning “to commit computer intrusion.” The charge is not that Assange succeeded in hacking a government computer and obtaining classified information. It merely says that Assange discussed the possibility with Manning and had an intention to hack a computer. Most likely, even this noncrime is an invention of prosecutors instructed to indict Assange in the absence of any evidence. It is all that they could come up with.
