VMFA Talking Points Debunked: Myth #1

Almost two years after the Va Flaggers began their campaign to RETURN the flags and RESTORE the honor to the Confederate Memorial Chapel , officials at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) are STILL offering the same talking points that they released then, all of which have been thoroughly debunked and refuted.  As we have in several meetings with Museum officials, we offer the facts here, one at a time,  for your information:

BOGUS "TALKING POINT" #1:

VMFA:  “Archival documents show that no flags were flown on the Chapel in the late 1800’s.  An illustration published in the Richmond Dispatch in 1896 that depicts the Camp shows only one flag being flown on the property, the U.S. Flag”

Va Flaggers:  There are many photographs showing the Soldiers raising and lowering a Confederate Battle Flag on the grounds of the Old Soldier’s home, and many others of the Confederate Battle Flag flying.  To choose a single sketch drawing, where the artist may/may not have taken artistic liberties, from a single day in time and claim that the decision was based on that information is obviously grasping at straws.

History is made at a moment in time.  Tradition is made over a continuation of time.  The Chapel does have a historical tradition of flying two Confederate Battle Flags, from 1993 – 2010.  Added to that 17 year period is the time from 1884-1941 when the soldiers themselves flew a 10x10 Confederate Battle Flag from the Lee Camp pole for 57 years, making a grand total of 74 years in which the Confederate Battle Flag has had a presence in Confederate Memorial Park.

Nerve gas points to rebels

 

Former U.S. intelligence analysts claim current intelligence analysts have told them Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was not responsible for the Aug. 21 poison gas attack on the outskirts of Damascus, Syria, which killed 1,429 people, of whom more than 400 where children.

They claim the “growing body of evidence” reveals the incident was a pre-planned provocation by the Syrian opposition and its Saudi and Turkish supporters.

“The aim is reported to have been to create the kind of incident that would bring the United States into the war,” one former U.S. intelligence analysts said.

The analysts referred to a meeting a week before the Aug. 21 incident in which opposition military commanders ordered preparations for an “imminent escalation” due to a “war-changing development” that would be followed by the “U.S.-led bombing of Syria.”

In addition, the former U.S. analysts said that Israel welcomed limited U.S. military action but not so much that it would strengthen rebel groups, which are “increasingly dominated by Sunni jihadis.”

In an open memorandum to U.S. President Barack Obama, who is contemplating a strike on Syria’s military in response to this incident, members of the Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity, or VIPS, said that even British officials are aware that it wasn’t al-Assad who committed the atrocity.

Storm Clouds over Syria: Connecting Muslim Brotherhood Dots

     The Muslim Brotherhood was born in Egypt in 1928, but it now has 100 million adherents in at least 80 countries including the United States. It is generously funded by Persian Gulf oil profits, most recently, especially from the Gulf Emirate of Qatar.

     Since the late 1970s, the Syrian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) has been trying to overthrow the secularist military government of Syria, which is dominated by the relatively moderate and mystical Alawite Shia Muslim minority—just 13 percent of the population. About 60 percent of Syrians are Sunni Muslims.

     In 1982, the Syrian Army resorted to an artillery bombardment of MB-backed Sunni Muslim rebels who held part of the city of Hama to crush the revolt. More than 20,000 people were killed. Various levels of Muslin Brotherhood warfare to overthrow the Assad regimes in Syria have continued for almost 35 years. It was the “Arab Spring” uprisings in Egypt, Tunisia, and Libya during 2011 that revived the Muslim Brotherhood’s “civil war” in Syria and masked its barbaric MB-backed insurgents as “democratic freedom fighters.” 

     Religion, political authority, and civil law are inseparable in the Prophet Muhammad’s teachings. The Brotherhood’s Sunni Muslim religious and political principles are “salafist,” reflecting the strongly fundamentalist and militant approach to the Koran and the Prophet’s teachings embraced by the founding generations of Islam.

     Fundamentalist interpretation of the Koran and the Prophet’s teachings is the dominant norm in Islam, but salafism and its wahhabism ideological twin in Saudi Arabia are its most common militant forms.  Contrary to wishful Western thinking, institutionalized moderate Islam is rare, the Shia Alawites being one of few exceptions. So-called “moderate” individual Sunni and Shia Muslims are common, but it would be more appropriate to call them secularized or purely cultural Muslims. The doctrinal standards of Islam—the Koran and the teachings of Muhammad—are filled with exhortations to heavy-handed coercion, ruthless vengeance, and violent Holy War (Jihad) against uncooperative unbelievers.

     Syria also has a 10 percent Christian minority who have lived in relative peace and prosperity under the religiously tolerant Alawite sect of the Assad regimes. Some Alawites even celebrate the birth of Jesus and Palm Sunday. Northwestern Syria, including Antioch, was a leading cradle of early Christianity and was occupied by Christian Crusaders from 1098 to 1268. The Alawite and Christian minorities in Syria may be the reason that Arab nationalism has historically been more important than Muslim identity in Syria.

     In May 2012, Muslim Brotherhood leader and Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi preached to a large crowd that a new day had arrived in Egypt. He shouted five principles, each one repeated in unison by the enthusiastic crowd:

“The Koran is our constitution!”

“The Prophet Muhammad is our leader!

“Jihad is our path!”

“And death for the sake of Allah is our most lofty aspiration!”

“Above all—Allah is our goal.”

These were simply a paraphrased statement of the Muslim’s Brotherhood’s longtime motto:

“Allah is our objective. The Prophet is our leader. The Koran is our law. Jihad is our way. Dying in the way of Allah is our highest hope.”

     Throughout its history the predominant Muslim Brotherhood strategy for imposing Islamic government, religion, and comprehensive civil and social law (Sharia) on the world has been incremental gradualism, generally only escalating its militancy when political numbers and power put irresistible dominance within reach. However, it uses assassination, terrorism, violent armed force, and brutal tyranny whenever expedient or to complete its final surge to power.

     It is the Muslim Brotherhood that spawned the two most active and newsworthy Sunni terrorist organizations, Hamas and al-Qaeda. The Brotherhood recruited Osama bin Laden in the process. They were heavily involved in Benghazi.

     In infiltrating the commercial, social, educational, media, religious, and government hierarchies of the United States and other Western countries, Muslim Brotherhood agents exert considerable efforts to disguise themselves as peaceful, tolerant, and moderate. In this deception, they use a creative host of front organizations. Their spokesmen are educated, well groomed, and articulate. Some of the more prominent Muslim Brotherhood front organizations are:

ISNA—Islamic Society of North America, the largest and most powerful.

CAIR—Council on American Islamic Relations, the principle MB propaganda organization, often seen on network news. 

MSA—Muslim Student Association

MAS—Muslim American Society

NAIT—North American Islamic Trust, a principle purveyor of Sharia Finance agreements enabling increasing financial control of U.S. financial institutions.

     Both Presidents Clinton and G. W. Bush and many influential American leaders were badly misled by advisors about the nature of Islam and the Muslim Brotherhood. They were convinced by CAIR propaganda and liberal academics that Islam was a religion of “peace and tolerance” that had been hijacked by radical terrorists. However, the Islam of “peace and tolerance” turned out to be a counterfactual myth. Muslim Brotherhood infiltration into powerful positions of influence proceeded by a quantum leap under President Obama.

     In December 2012, Egypt’s Rose El-Youssef magazine alleged that six members of the Muslim Brotherhood had turned the White House into the most important supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood: Arif Alikhan, Assistant Secretary for Homeland Security policy; Mohammed Elibiary, a member of the Homeland Security Advisory Council; Eboo Patel, on the President’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based Neighborhood Partnerships; Rashad Hussain, U.S. Special Envoy to the 57-nation Organization for Islamic Cooperation; ISNA President Imam Mohamed Magid; and Muslim Public Affairs Council founder, Salam al-Marayati. 

     Paul Sperry, author of Infiltration, and former Congressman Allen West have alleged that the Brotherhood has infiltrated into influential levels in national intelligence, national security, military, law enforcement, including the Justice Department, and the White House. 

     President Obama taped a two-minute message for the ISNA Convention on September 2. ISNA is an unindicted co-conspirator in the 2007 Hamas terrorist group funding case. Among his remarks was this statement:

“My administration is proud to be your partner.”

     The September 3 issue of Front Page Magazine asserted its opinion that “President Obama…has plans for fighting a war on behalf of the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria…”

McCain's blood money or Senators who voted for Syria strike got more defense contractor dough

 The ten Senate Foreign Relations Committee members who voted to attack Syria received 83 percent more campaign contributions from defense contractors than the seven senators who voted against it, according to analysis from Maplight.org.

Examining data from 2007 to 2012, the analysts found that the average senator who voted “yes” on the authorization of the use of military force took $72,850 from defense contractors and other defense industry interests. Senators who voted “no” received just $39,770 on average.

Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain led the pack among those in favor, raking in about $176,000 from defense interests over five years. Illinois Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin garnered $127,000 from the defense industry, followed by Virginia Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine, who picked up a cool $101,000.

AP: Congress Voting 6 to 1 Against Strike

 

Suggesting an uphill fight for President Barack Obama, House members staking out positions are either opposed to or leaning against his plan for a U.S. military strike against Syria by more than a 6-1 margin, a survey by The Associated Press shows. The Senate is more evenly divided ahead of its vote next week.

Still, the situation is very fluid. Nearly half of the 433-member House and a third of the 100-member Senate remain undecided.

By their statements or those of aides, only 30 members of the Republican-led House support intervention or are leaning in favor of authorizing the president to use force against Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government in response to a chemical weapons attack last month.

Some 192 House members outright oppose U.S. involvement or are leaning against authorization, according to the AP survey.

The situation in the Democrat-controlled Senate is better for Obama but hardly conclusive ahead of a potential vote next week. The AP survey showed those who support or are leaning in favor of military action holding a slight 34-32 advantage over those opposed or leaning against it.

Complicating the effort in the Senate is the possibility that a three-fifths majority may be required. Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky says he is going to filibuster.

Travel packing tips for photographers and others

I travel a lot. A few weeks ago when I picked up Amanda in the airport we talked about the best ways to stuff stuff into stuff and I realized that I should do a comprehensive blog post about it. So this is how to be a globetrotting photographer, getting your things from one place to another with the least hassle.

(Tl: dr get functional clothes that pack small and perform multiple purposes, be organized, don't weigh yourself down with things that perform only one function.)

1) Pack small. Dot check bags.

Checking bags is a hassle - it slows you down getting on and off of the plane and the airline can misplace your luggage, lots of airlines charge for checked bags now and someone has to carry all that stuff once you get wherever you're going . When I travel I want to be able to carry everything that I'm going to use with me, like a snail. Or a turtle. Or a flying turtle, like Gammora. This limits you to one carry on and one "small personal item". So you need to be able to fit all your gear and your clothes into a small space.

2) Buy clothes made for backpackers.
