The Last Hillbilly Hero

Via comment by Horace on Merry Christmas from Corruption NC

The grave of the last American outlaw sits off a dirt road in the backwoods of Maggie Valley, North Carolina, the hillbilly haven where Marvin “Popcorn” Sutton, the most notorious moonshiner ever, lived and died in the wildest of ways. The most notable thing about the grave? It’s empty.

I’m here to follow the path of Sutton’s exhumed bones and unravel the mystery behind this modern-day legend. A third-generation moonshiner, born in 1946, Popcorn spent his life distilling the secret recipe for corn whiskey that his Scotch-Irish forefathers brought over centuries ago. His white lightning wasn’t just potent and sweet—it was illegal. And Popcorn, who refused to pay taxes and considered moonshine part of his “don’t tread on me” heritage, wore his rebel badge with pride. As Hank Williams Jr. says of Popcorn, “This guy was real Appalachian Americana. He was a folk hero.” Even in death his battles wage on: Popcorn’s whiskey recently became available legally for the first time, but a family feud over his legacy shows no signs of resolution.

As I discover over several sweltering days and clandestine jugs of moonshine, Popcorn left a twisted trail: scorned women, abandoned kids, complicit cops, even homemade sex machines, exploding stills, and the tale of a throat-slit fiddler on the side of the road. At the center of it all was a guy who, right up until his bizarre death, defied his stereotype as much as he seemed to fulfill it. To the fans and celebs who came from around the world to buy his booze, Popcorn was the banjo-picking cracker with the long beard, grimy overalls, and bawdy stories. But to those who knew him, he was something more: a brilliant self-promoter and chemist who ultimately despised the persona he had crafted as expertly as his booze. “He hated the persona,” says his widow, Pam Sutton. Through it all, there was just one thing that guided him: his likker (as he liked to spell it). “I can brag about one thing,” Popcorn once said in his thick Southern drawl. “Making likker. They ain’t no damn body that can beat me making likker.” And, in the end, he chose to die rather than get beat.

Repost from 23 Apr 2010: Popcorn Sutton: Dead By Government B-------

"He couldn't go to prison. His mind would just not accept it. ... So credit the federal government for my husband being dead, I really do."
--Pam Sutton

(I've finally found an article that expresses my true feelings about the disgraceful, criminal treatment of a hero, although he could have accomplished the same purpose with less profanity. Dixie and I plan to go to his hometown after the SCV's Sam Davis Youth Camp this summer, and pay our respects.

Warning: Language, and repeated in the beginning. BT)

"He was a Free Man. One of the few who can honestly say they deserve that title. The chains never came to rest upon him.

Can any of us say the same?

You can live on your knees, or die on your feet. You can be safe, or you can be free.

A man chooses. A slave obeys."

Comey Mandates All FBI Agents Report to D.C. Offices; Prep for Raids, Possible Arrests in Clinton Probes

Via Iver

"If this isn’t bullshit, it might prove to be worthwhile to have some popcorn and a beer!"

FBI Director James Comey issued a mandate late Thursday instructing all available special agents from the Washington D.C. field office and Hoover Building headquarters to report to work immediately, federal law enforcement sources told True Pundit.

“We’re preparing for many arrests from the top down,” the FBI source said. “I cannot elaborate beyond that.”

When pressed to better define what “from the top down” meant in terms of possible suspects, the source refused to elaborate.

“You’re a smart guy; read between the lines,” the source said.

A Campaign Speech, Not A Memorial Service

"Everything I saw at that memorial service last night disgusted me. First, there was the fact that this event, which was supposed to be a memorial service, was given a slogan. It was branded. The brand was stamped all over university buses preceding the event to advertise, as well as free t-shirts handed out to people who attended the service.

Oh, and the concession stands were open, too. Because you can’t pay your respects to those murdered by a madman without a large Coke and some popcorn, right?

Yet we’re somehow surprised at the pep rally-like atmosphere? Please. Add in some styrofoam Greek columns and you’d have Obama’s speech at the Democratic National Convention all over again. The disgusting, disrespectful whooping and cheering was infuriating — but not surprising. Obama played into it."

Saigon Feburary 21, 2017 & "Make Vietnam YouTubers Great Again!" :)

She's sad because I took my GMS ring back when she put it in her mouth. :)

From Israel.

'US Veteran Brock Townsend' taken and labeled by Kinh whose father was a Major in the ARVN, spent 8 years in reeducation camp and only lived one year afterwards, unfortunately. He is a reporter and a really nice guy.

Kinh's son as a child.  An amazing coincidence as I bought the same ARVN Airborne uniform just before we were evacuated from Saigon.  All five of my daughters have worn this and it is in excellent shape.

They weren't singing the VNCH anthem, that's for sure.

The cafe shop owner took this and posted as 'American reading Vietnamese newspaper.'

Karin and her son from Austria. Delightful.

Hi Brock, Just want to send you a picture from Vienna where I am currently working ( this one is just a part from the Schönbrunn castle). Lg Karin

This one is San Vito (Friuli region) where our Italian friends are living. You can see the so called "campanile" - each city has one, not only Venice. 😊

That's my most favourite "beach" during summer. You see how crowded! 😊 maybe because of the water temperature (18 celsius maximum). This is nearby "Gmunden", and the lake is called Traunsee (Traun lake)

Hiking at Dachstein mountain

The grade school in back of the hotel.

Free tea for all.

The road side owners block off the gutters. I guess because the government doesn't clean them out or are too slow when needed.

Vietnamese M&M's.  1/3rd cheaper than the real ones, but taste exactly same though the Vietnamese ones have some defects.

Priceless! :)

A wonderful driver.  Had a blast.

A man putting cement down in front of the business as I assume it's up to the people to take care of this.

The Vietnamese use tomatoes both as vegetables and fruit.  This is a fruit drink stand where I order freshly squeezed tomato juice, with no sugar, but salt, pepper and lemon/lime that they have available.  Hot sauce and alcohol is abundance, so if I can find L&P I can make a real or virgin Bloody Mary.

Employees of the hotel.  Very friendly.

The two on the left are from England as is Richard of course.

 Another yum. yum.

Can't remember the name, but a root that you dip in salt and pepper that the Ma and Pa store gave me.

They sell hotdogs and popcorn here now and for the first time I've ever seen. I also took a hint from the hotel staff.  Periodically, before the toilet bowl stains, they use sandpaper.  Something I had never thought of.
