A Brief History of the Alabama Red Rovers

 roster

Via Jeffery "Twice the number of men were massacred at Goliad vs. the Alamo. One account I read in "Early Settlers of Lawrence County and Alabama" states that when the men were about to be executed, they were on the their knees and one facing away from the Mexicans. One of the men stood up and said, "Boys, they are going to kill us---die with your faces to them, like men!"

In November of 1835, urges for help went out to newspapers throughout the United States. One such urge printed in the Huntsville Democrat read:

“If Volunteers from the U. States will join their brethren in this section, they will receive liberal bounties of land. We have millions of acres of our best land unchosen and unappropriated. Let each man come with a good rifle and 100 rounds of ammunition – and come soon. Our war-cry is “Liberty or Death.” Our principles are to support the Constitution, and DOWN WITH THE USURPER!”

  1. I have seen the Texian Patiot Flag my entire life, but didn't know the reason behind it until now. We get Texas History classes in our schools but they don't go into great detail or even mention men of this caliber that came to help during that time. They left everything behind to go help out complete strangers against a brutal and savage Mexican army. Their sacrifices will not ever be forgotten. Thanks for posting Brock. Your history lessons are the best!
