Yes, you are quite right. It was over before the first 'non-insignia' troops finished their movement and established their bases of operations inside Crimea.
Wouldn't matter who has the helm in the Kremlin Russia will never give up their access to any warm water port they hold. We in the west can blow and bluster on for millennia and it would be a wasted exercise. Eastern Ukraine is next on the list and when it is properly borged they will move on to absorb the rest.
