I'm outside a lot in inclement weather. Our last two winters in NE were doozy's where the temp dropped hard and stayed down. Apple devices do NOT like prolonged cold. Most smartphones won't last long either in sub freezing and I personally found that the single digit category tends to degrade service quite rapidly and soon they are just a brick. No criticizing this link cause this is some nifty tech. I could see this being useful in a number of environments depending on the range. I have a device I use that acts like a laser pointer and catches surface temps. It's useful range is about 20' but it's been great for scoping air gaps on winterizing projects.

DeleteNice idea but still more toy than tool. While it can distinguish an adequate range and differentiation in temperature the actual image resolution isn't great. If you want to see
ReplyDeletewhich parts of your ceiling are colder vs warmer it's adequate. Want to see if a mammal of some type is hiding in that brush 40 yards away? Not quite so good at that compared to a true FLIR scope.

DeleteAnd as long as people understand that with this as with Gen I night vision they are buying a toy, not a tool. Too many people buy technology from the low end because of price thinking 'there, I have night vision or thermal vision, now on to the next item I need'. Not realizing that in some things price and utility are not always related while in others there is a direct correlation. In NV/IR scopes price is a DIRECT correlation to quality and utility. And while the cost of NV has come down since a decade ago it's still quite pricey to get something worth having.....$3K being the typical range for quality. For IR/Thermal nothing under about $4-5K is going to be of any real use. I have no problem with cheap toys....as long as people understand that is exactly what they are getting. A toy with limited ability and utility.
