Is Spain about to dig up dictator Francisco Franco?

On Tuesday Spain’s congress is debating whether to exhume the remains of General Franco from the giant mausoleum crowned with a 150 meter high granite cross on a hillside outside Madrid.

Spain’s lawmakers are expected to approve a motion urging the government to begin the process that will see the controversial site transformed from a monument glorifying the fascist dictator into a place of reflection and reconciliation that “acknowledges the victims of the civil war and ensuing dictatorship”.

But will this actually result in the exhumation of Spain’s most controversial leader?

The Local takes’s a look at the issue:

What exactly is the Valley of the Fallen?

  1. When will people accept that their leaders are never perfect?

Franco saved Spain from communism. Even Orwell was repulsed by the Communists in Spain. That's partly what drove him to write 1984.

What they really want: A world without history, tradition, culture, etc. A plastic world that can be readily moulded by whatever powers rule at a given time. Replace the word "Spain" with "District 347" (random number).
