The Farce of Biofuels

Via Bill

I purchased my previous lawnmower in July 2016 after the carburetor in my previous one had succumbed to the mandated ten percent ethanol in gasoline. But I was back to Sears again in September 2017 for the same villainous ethanol problem. Since Sears could not repair this latest victim of ethanol, they gave me a new model with improved features. I am covered by warranty until July 2019.

I guess I really can’t complain, but be aware that in the U.S., marine and farming equipment fuels are exempt from the mandated ten percent ethanol. I guess the corn farmers knew what this stuff does to your engine.

  1. I have had to replace 3 carburetors for small engines: one chainsaw ($68), one lawnmower ($130), and one pressure washer($82). I have also had to replace the entire fuel system on my '74 Stingray. The gas tank with all of it's guts, fuel lines, fuel pump, and carburetor to the tune of $3K.

I can run the 90 octane real gasoline and get 20.4 mpg city and 22.5mpg highway. If I run the 89 octane ethanol crap I get 18 city and 19.7 highway.

I read somewhere that it costs about $3.50 to produce a gallon of ethanol. With 10% ethanol gasoline running about $2.50 a gallon what is the logic of an additive that drops performance and damages the fuel systems and is cost prohibitive to produce?

None, but liberals never to use logic.

  2. I believe that the energy return on investment of oil is one. In other words it takes the energy of a barrel of oil to produce the equivalent energy in the corn ethanol.
It takes about an EROI of 30 to support an advanced society.
Investing one barrel of oil to get 30 barrels of oil equivalent result.
Our EROI has fallen drastically. It is only by borrowing money (or creating it out of thin air and as the world reserve currency that we continue in operation. The value of almost all has been sucked out of it by financializing all. There is no capital left in most everything. All is leveraged. Few profits exist any more.

  3. My buddy's chainsaw is back for repairs again! 3rd time this summer. I loan him mine while I fix his. I told him NEVER use ethanol. When I hauled fuels for a living, the test for a proper fuel to ethanol blend was a beaker full of blended fuel. 2-3 drops of water separated the gas from the ethanol. This was back in the 80's & I've never used that crap since.

  4. The irony is there are legitimate environmental issues. It's a shame things portrayed as "environmental" are usually a scam nowadays.
