It is infrequently mentioned that much of the Egyptian air force was flown by British pilots. I guess the Americans were index better trained and motivated thsn the British.
There was certainly an abundance of trained pilots and surplus military equipment around. And wars have a way of generating a goodly supply of soldiers of fortune in their wake.
It also helps when your enemy - the Arabs - state that this will be a "momentous massacre", i.e., a war of extermination. When your back's against the wall you fight like there's no tomorrow, because if you lose, there isn't.
