Meet your (Chinese) Facebook censors

China is one of the most censorious societies on Earth. So what better place for Facebook to recruit social media censors?

There are at least half a dozen “Chinese nationals who are working on censorship,” a former Facebook insider told me last week. “So at some point, they [Facebook bosses] thought, ‘Hey, we’re going to get them H-1B visas so they can do this work.’ ”

  1. Related, the problems with Wawei and Tic Toc is not that they are owned by the Chinese government. It is that they were created by the Chinese government to monitor their own population. Changing ownership to Oracle doesn't fix that. The monitoring is built into the code, not the company management. By building it into the code, you don't need to hire thousands of cheap Chinese workers to monitor the network.
