What Difference Does it Make?

Via III Percent Patriots

In the last stanza of “The Battle of Blenheim,” Robert Southey writes:

“But what good came of it at last?” Quoth little Peterkin.

“Why, that I cannot tell,” said he; “But ’twas a famous victory.”

What did it really matter? The poet was asking of the triumph of the Duke of Marlborough — “Who this great fight did win.”

What brings back this poem about the transience of glory and folly of war — during this week’s struggle over whose flag will fly over Crimea — is a wall chart that just arrived from the UN.
“World Population 2012″ projects the population growth, or decline, of every country and continent, between now and 2050.

Most deeply involved in Crimea’s crisis are Russia and Ukraine. Yet, looking at the UN numbers, there seems an element of absurdity in this confrontation that could lead to a shooting war.

I literally asked him if a law was passed to put Jews in the Ghettos, would you? He literally said "Now you are being silly...but if its the law, I enforce it; I don't make them."

To me THAT was the quote of the story that everyone is missing.

Yep--as if Nuremberg never happened, Peterson evidently believes that "just following orders" justifies any evil--including rounding up victims of a planned Holocaust.

A North Carolinian Estimate of Sherman's Associates

Racing Sherman’s 65,000 man army to Cheraw, South Carolina after evacuating Charleston on 17 February 1865, General William J. Hardee and his 10,000 men continued to Fayetteville and then Averasborough, North Carolina, to establish a strong defensive position. There Sherman was stung for the first time since departing Atlanta on his raid upon farms, old men, women and children.

A North Carolinian Estimate of Sherman's Associates

“On March 7, 1865 General William T. Sherman and his army of mercenaries from Germany, Ireland, Scotland, Sweden, Switzerland and Prussia, as well as the northern United States, many of whom could not speak English, crossed the North Carolina State line. Behind them lay the smoking ruins of sacked Georgia and South Carolina cities, homeless widows and orphans, and death by starvation.

At Laurel Hill, NC, Sherman halted to refresh his troops, and from here he wired General Schofield in Wilmington that he would be in Goldsboro, NC March 20, 1865 via Fayetteville, NC. On March 12th Sherman and his army of barbarians reached Fayetteville. After plundering the residential section, it was then burned. Also destroyed were four cotton mills, the churches, banks, courthouse and warehouses. Sherman then moved on looting and burning. Any item that could not be carried, including furniture, carpets and farm equipment, was destroyed. Even the cabins of the slaves were robbed by the Yankees.”

Navy Warship 'Accidentally' Fires Torpedo At Nuclear Dockyard

Via WiscoDave

"Had the thing been armed it would have let out a 200-metre blast...You could be talking about a major loss of life," one source noted as The Telegraph reports British military chiefs have launched a major investigation after a Royal Navy warship accidentally fired a torpedo at a nuclear dockyard.

Workers watched in disbelief as the tube-shaped projectile flew through the air before blasting a hole in a security fence and slamming into a storage container. "Someone has obviously pushed the button, presumably by accident - the big question is who," as the Royal Navy stiff-upper-lippedly stated "during a training exercise, an inert Test Variant Torpedo unexpectedly jettisoned onto the wharf. There was no explosion and no casualties." Perhaps they should stay away from the Black Sea for a while - just in case.

Illegal Alien Planning to Sue American First Responders Who Saved His Life

Roy Ortiz, an illegal immigrant living in Colorado, was recently rescued from dangerous flood waters by first responders. Now Ortiz, who barely speaks English, is thinking about suing them because "mistakes were made." The argument? Rescuers failed to get him out of a submerged car fast enough and now he's having bad dreams. Ortiz is demanding $500,000 in damages which if awarded, would be paid out by taxpayers.

Bill Gates Says Neither People Nor Governments Are Prepared for the Huge Changes Coming to the Labor Market

Via Ryan

Within 20 years, “software substitution” will dramatically reduce the demand for many types jobs, Bill Gates said Thursday at the American Enterprise Institute. It’s a gloomy prediction that he says many people, including governments, aren’t prepared for.

Make no mistake, “software substitution” is a fancy way of saying software automation — as in “bots” and whatnot. Many of the jobs that could be eliminated are lower skill occupations.

“Software substitution, whether it’s for drivers or waiters or nurses … it’s progressing,” Gates said. “Technology over time will reduce demand for jobs, particularly at the lower end of skill set. … 20 years from now, labor demand for lots of skill sets will be substantially lower. I don’t think people have that in their mental model.”

"We are producing illiterate, unemployable barbarians inassimilable to a First World country."

 http://www.studentsfirst.org/page/-/images/Infographics/united-states-education-statistics-reading-small.jpg

Despite much wringing of teeth and gnashing of hands about the decline in schooling in the United States, I have seen very little concrete comparison between then and now, whatever one means by “then.” In my small way, as a mere anecdote in a sea of troubles, I hereby offer an actual comparison. Permit me to preview the result: Much of the United States has sunk to the level of the lower ranks of the Third World.

As an example of documented current practice in urban schools—I have seen similar from Detroit, Chicago, and Mississippi—here are a few emails sent to the New York Post by students of Manhattan’s Murry Bergtraum HS for Business Careers. These have been posted by various horrified writers, but I repeat them here in case the reader hasn’t seen them. They concern the students’ support for something called “Blended Learning,” in which one watches a video, answers a few questions, and gets credit. The Post had written a piece critical of same, putting the students into an uproar.

A junior wrote: “What do you get of giving false accusations im one of the students that has blended learning I had a course of English and I passed and and it helped a lot you’re a reported your support to get truth information other than starting rumors . . .”

Right out of Milton, that.

Police: Victim of bat attack kills black assailants

A maintenance worker in Milwaukee allegedly was held down by two black teens and beaten by a third person with a baseball bat when he shot and killed the two teens, according to police.

James Bell Jr., 19, and Anmarie Miller, 17, were shot to death Wednesday at an apartment building on the city’s north side where the maintenance man worked, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

The 39-year-old worker, who has not been named by police, had his injuries treated at a hospital. He then was taken into custody at the Milwaukee County Jail on suspicion of committing two counts of first-degree intentional homicide, Milwaukee’s WITI-TV reported.

The third individual involved in the attack was arrested for battery. No one has been charged, and prosecutors are reviewing the case. Police say the incident was caught on video.
