[Photos] A Glimpse Into Life in Vung Tau in 1967

 

Been there many a time (once on my honeymoon) and looks basically the same today.

Today, Vung Tau is a bustling tourist spot for Saigoneers looking to get out of the city and enjoy some ocean waves, but these photos from 1967 reveal its past as a working port.

Vung Tau has been an important city for centuries, especially because its unique geography allowed for it to serve as a safe harbor during storms – a fact alluded to in its name, which translates to “anchoring bay.” It has therefore long fostered commerce and activity as the below photos by Chris Chubb attest to.

From markets stuffed with clothes, engine parts and cooking ingredients, 50 years ago Vung Tau hosted a frenzy of trade. But once one left the busy city center, the activity quickly gave way to quiet fields and humble buildings. Farmers tending crops and traditional wooden boats resting at low tide reveal what Vung Tau was like before the resorts gobbled up the coastline.

Army mulls tougher basic training for out-of-shape, undisciplined recruits

Citing a disturbing trend of new soldiers lacking both proper discipline and physical fitness, senior U.S. Army leaders are calling for a tougher and longer basic training program to prepare troops for combat over the next decade.

“We have every reason to get this right, and far fewer reasons not to,” Secretary of the Army Mark Esper said at the Association of the United States Army's Global Force Symposium in Alabama on Monday. “That’s why we are considering several initiatives — from a new physical fitness regime to reforming and extending basic training — in order to ensure our young men and women are prepared for the rigors of high-intensity combat.”

NC Guns: BOYCOTT PUSH BACK

Perhaps boycotts have their place but going after another person’s livelihood for some innocuous statement, just because you have a minor disagreement, is not one of those places.

Recently, Laura Ingraham used her twitter account to question the reasons that the child anti-Second Amendment activist, David Hogg, was not accepted to certain universities. Ingraham tweeted: 

David Hogg Rejected By Four Colleges To Which He Applied and whines about it. (Dinged by UCLA with a 4.1 GPA...totally predictable given acceptance rates.)

This seems a somewhat meaningless (and boring) tweet really, but apparently it sent Hogg, having recently discovered the ultimate rush of near monarchial power, into a tantrum such that he tweeted that all should contact Laura Ingraham’s advertisers and threaten to boycott them unless they dumped their advertising on Ingraham’s show. If you don’t support boycotts based strictly on the temper tantrum of a prideful student activist, who is sadly being used by the American media to push an agenda, you can contact these advertisers to let them know that David Hogg does not speak for you, and express your disdain for Lord of the Flies-style leadership).

Hank Williams' Funeral

 

This piece was originally printed in Southern Partisan magazine in 1985.

Hank Williams has now been dead longer than he lived. And outside of a hundred or more fine songs, his thrity-year-old memory survives best among some of his cousins down in Georgiana, Alabama, about sixty miles south of Montgomery. Among them are Taft and Erleen Skipper (Taft’s daddy and Hank’s mother were brother and sister), who run a kind of clearing house on Hank. Taft is a tall, thin, and happy man, content to make way for a vital wife who keeps up a hand-written correspondence that would intimidate the secretarial corps at General Motors. Hank’s fans call Erleen so often to chat about their hero that she has to sleep with the phone off the hook. But she’ll talk to you in daylight.

And if you love Hank like she does, she’ll have you to dinner the day before the Hank Williams Memorial Picnic. (That way you’ll know enough people to feel at home when she has you to dinner again at the picnic). I swear that she’ll have cousins who have come all the way from Mobile and Panama City eat in the kitchen to make room at the table for a stranger from New York or Oklahoma who wants to know more about Hank.

‘Enough Is Enough’: Nearly 400 Sheriffs Demand Congress Reduce Immigration, Criminalize Sanctuary Cities

Nearly 400 sheriffs across the country are calling on the Republican-controlled Congress to follow through on President Trump’s popular immigration agenda by securing the nation’s porous borders and criminalizing sanctuary cities.

Sheriff Thomas M. Hodgson of Bristol County, Massachusetts, has gathered with about 380 sheriffs from across America, representing 40 states, to ask Congress to push Trump’s agenda that would help decrease and end illegal immigration to the United States.

“Enough is enough,” the sheriffs write. They continue, saying:

AR-15 vs. AK-47: Which Is King?

 

It’s a discussion that has preoccupied some gun enthusiasts for decades. Which is better between the civilian-legal versions of the two primary military weapons of the Cold War superpowers: the AR-15 or the AK-47? I’ve owned both, so I figured that was as good a reason as any to pretend my opinion counts for anything and get to work.

As time has marched on, the positions have shifted a bit as economic realities changed. That’s why some older discussions on the internet might give you some bad information that’s not relevant in this day and age. What was true seven or eight years ago may or may not be true today.

Operation in Syria's Ghouta 'nearly over', Russia says - Trump: U.S. troops will be out of Syria 'very soon'

The massive Russian-backed Syrian military offensive in suburbs east of Damascus is almost over, with rebels holed up in just a single town after abandoning the rest of the eastern Ghouta enclave, Moscow said on Thursday.

Russia and the rebel faction controlling Douma, the last Ghouta town still in insurgent hands, said they were still negotiating over the fate of the town. Moscow said it saw a chance of the remaining insurgents quitting Douma.

Thousands of fighters have accepted Russian-brokered deals to leave other parts of the enclave in the past week with their families on government-supplied buses, giving them safe passage to other insurgent-held areas. Tens of thousands of other civilians have stayed behind to accept state rule, and tens of thousands more have fled across the frontline.

Former Obama-era Attorney General Eric Holder doesn’t exactly have the best memory. Just look at any of the statements before Congress during the inquiry into the Fast and Furious scandal.

Of course, Holder has not gone quietly into that good night of officialdom. He’s been politically active, advising the state of California in its legal battles against the Trump administration and even possibly considering a 2020 presidential run.

I’m sure Mexican gun runners will just love that. But never mind. The point is that Holder hasn’t stepped out of the spotlight, especially when it comes to promoting liberal causes.

The recent kiddies' 'March for Our Lives' seems vaguely reminiscent of Cambodia's 1970's Children's Revolution which was led by the manipulative Marxist, Pol Pot.   This children's revolution disarmed the Cambodian populace and afterwards, 25% of them were killed; nearly two million people in all.

The goal of the American Left is to do the same, which is why (were the 2nd Amendment repealed)
instead of turning in our guns as others have done, we will aim our guns AT THEM.  We will not meekly suffer the same horrific fate as those many tens of millions of helpless victims in Cambodia, Nazi Germany, Cuba,Russia, China and elsewhere. Here, the leftists will be annihilated, not us.
