Coburn Defends Vote To Hear Gun Control Bill

Via avordvet

Why I’m Fighting to Protect (BT) Damage Gun Rights

Many Oklahomans and gun owners across the country have asked why I have decided to participate in negotiations, and then vote to move to a debate, they view as designed to limit their rights.  I understand my role in this debate appears surprising in light of my long record of not only defending but expanding Second Amendment rights by, for example, giving Americans the right to carry guns in national parks.  I have also filibustered popular bills in order to defend the rights of veterans who have been stripped of their Second Amendment rights without due process because they were wrongly declared mentally unfit.

First, let me be clear about what the Senate will and will not be considering in the coming days.  The most onerous and blatantly unconstitutional provisions the gun control lobby favors – a ban on supposed “assault weapons” (any gun in the hands of a criminal is an assault weapon) and a plan to limit magazine sizes, policies I vehemently oppose – have zero chance of passing.  What is up for consideration is how to improve a broken system that literally allows illegal aliens, drug traffickers, child molesters, rapists, felons, members of al Qaeda cells and mentally-deranged persons to buy firearms.  If you believe the Second Amendment gives those people the right to arm themselves then we have an irreconcilable difference of opinion.

Because we know that they won't dare buy them on the street..........

  1. I went to his link and read his entire statement. If this moron believes for a second there will be fair and honest debate and his proposals have a chance in hades he is beyond help.
A vote for a motion to proceed is a vote for gun control. How did he ever get through medical school?
    I am being kind.

Absolutely. GOA and others stated the motion to proceed was where it should be defeated and I am sure Coburn knew that well.

  2. Rinos should have to explain why a war on guns will be any more effective than a war on drugs or a war on poverty. I am at a point that ANY passage of ANY further gun laws is license for me to vote and also encourage other voters to vote ANY AND ALL republicans out of office just to get the riff raff out and start from scratch again. Let the democratic socialist run this country off the cliff without the help of spineless rinos who only seem to be a couple of years slower than the DSA.

  3. This is why I cannot support the Republican Party any longer. They believe the people to be ignorant and will shallow any hogwash they wish to serve up. I say hang them all. Its time to start afresh. If our ancestors wouldn't let the British disarm them are current day Americans any less worthy of fighting for their liberty?

  4. Coburn already said he would not be running for re-election, so he has no political defeat to fear.
I did like this line from his statement: "expanding Second Amendment rights by, for example, giving Americans the right to carry guns in national parks". Oh, now you GAVE us rights, Tom? Why, thankee, massah! We sure did need you to be giving us them rights!
I reminded him via email and on his FB page that he has o report those thirty pieces of silver on his taxes.
