Rare Confederate Morse carbine up for auction in Indy

A Model 1861 Musket, a .58-caliber, percussion model rifle musket with bayonet, was built by William Muir and Company in Connecticut. The gun is up for auction at Wickliff Auctioneers in Carmel.

A rare, defective Civil War gun with Hoosier ties is up for auction this week.

Appraisers don't know who used it in the war and won't say who's selling it.

Just about the only thing about the weapon that isn't shrouded in mystery is that it will sell — and for a lot of money, at that.

"I've done gun shows from Baltimore to Las Vegas, almost 50 years," said Ed Higginbotham, 84, who was asked by an appraiser to help evaluate the weapon. "I've seen virtually everything you could imagine — but I've never seen a Morse carbine."
