The 145 Solution

In the modest and unassuming manner natural to this column, I advance a small proposal for the emendation of such tatters of the Constitution as can be found: For voting in federal elections, we should employ a literacy test to disenfranchise the majority of the population, to the infinite betterment of the country. This wise move should be accompanied by an increase in the voting age to twenty-five.

The necessity cannot be denied. Consider the following:

Forty-three percent of Americans think Saddam Hussein was personally involved in 9/11.

Sixty-four percent cannot name the three branches of the federal government.

Fourteen percent are illiterate.

Twenty-six percent think the sun goes around the earth.

These numbers may be understood in various ways. To a curmudgeon, who obtains a sour satisfaction from the endless repetition of human folly, they provide the satisfactions of confirmation.  We all enjoy being right. In practical terms, they mean that democracy, or our mild approximation thereto, is a sham, a fraud, an impossibility, and a bad idea. No one so blankly ignorant, so mentally without furniture, so muddle-headed, limited, and barren, should be allowed within hailing range of a voting booth.

  1. THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING OF THE ISSUE!

The MINIMUM for voting rights should be the test given to legal aliens seeking citizenship. Arizona just passed a law requiring it in order to graduate from high school. I believe this is in response to a shameful showing that made the news a few years back when it was less than 45% of Az graduating HS students that could pass the test.

A thorough lack of knowledge on part of the voting public is how we got into this mess in the first place. The majority don't even know the basics of our fight for freedom during the Rev War or how the government is SUPPOSED to work, much less any other part non-revisionist American history.

Another thing that needs to happen is that if you have no 'skin in the game'. you don't vote, meaning you get to vote only if you are a productive tax paying citizen. No more welfare queens voting as they watch Dancing With The NASCAR Idols on their big screen TVs bought with taxpayer dollars while sucking up beer and benefits bought with same. OF COURSE they are gonna vote for their providers, they have traded their souls and freedom for a vote. You want to vote? Get off the dole.

America has become the land of the freebie.

Govt. employees are another thing (military and first responders excepted) that needs looking into. In a sense WE are paying them to rule over us. One could argue that they also pay taxes. Yeah....but think about where they get they money to pay their taxes. It comes from the tax base of the ordinary citizens and the private sector. So in essence we are paying their salary, their taxes both state and federal, their house payment, their car payment, their grocery bill, sending their kids to college...you get the drift. They are in reality consumers and not providers and public service unions dictate the way the majority vote along with pols bought and paid for by said unions.

As for the high IQ issue for politicians, that's a double edged sword. We have a bunch of supposed intellectuals/academics running the govt. now. How's that working out for ya? In my time on this planet I have seen far too many in the above categories that I would have to call book smart and street stupid. Having a high IQ does not necessarily mean your are capable.

Sorry for the rant, this article hit one of my HOT buttons.
