Mayor of Berkeley Jesse Arreguin on Monday said it is time to confront the violent extremism on the left by treating black-clad Antifa protesters as a gang.
A large number of masked Antifa activists were seen jumping the barriers at a largely peaceful demonstration in Berkeley’s Martin Luther King Civic Center Park on Sunday.
Some began attacking Trump supporters at the rally.
“I think we should classify them as a gang,” said Arreguin. “They come dressed in uniforms. They have weapons, almost like a militia and I think we need to think about that in terms of our law enforcement approach.”

Four Major Liberal Outlets Denounce Antifa
The tide is turning against the militant “anti-fascist” movement, as more liberal outlets are finally denouncing antifa violence. Four major liberal media outlets have raised eyebrows for doing so Monday: MSNBC, The Washington Post, the Associated Press, and even New York Magazine.
“This is an ongoing problem at Berkeley especially, where members of the far left are using violence to shut down free speech and there, to shut down demonstrators,” Scarborough said.
The antifa activists used shields and weapons to attack both rally attendees and members of the media who were covering the event. Several people were injured and two were hospitalized.
“Who is running Berkeley, and why can't they protect free speech? What's your problem in Berkeley? Why can't you protect free speech?” the “Morning Joe” host asked, urging the activists to “take your mask off.”
One of Scarborough's guests noted the antifa tactics were “nothing but fascist in their behavior.”
