Sukhoi 25 shot down by Syrian rebels: Pilot killed in shoot out

Rebel fighters in Syria have shot down a Russian plane using a handheld anti-aircraft missile and killed its pilot when he open fire on them while trying to resist capture.

Dramatic video shows the Sukhoi 25 plummeting out of the sky after it was hit in the north-western province of Idlib while carrying out a strike on rebels fighting the regime of Bashar al-Assad, Russia's ally.

Another video then shows jubilant rebels celebrating as the wreckage burns on the ground, sending a huge plume of black smoke into the air.

The pilot managed to eject and parachute to the ground before being captured. He was shot and killed when he resisted capture by opening fire from his pistol on the al-Qaeda-linked militants who tried to seize him alive.

  1. Comment from Russia: lawmakers are concerned about how the militants could have acquired the anti-aircraft weapon. "We have information that the MANPADS used to bring down our jet was brought into Syria from a neighboring country several days ago," MP Dmitry Sablin, coordinator of the Russia-Syria parliamentary friendship group, told Interfax. "Countries from whose territory weapons arrive, that are then used against Russian servicemen, must understand that whis will not go unpunished," he added.

Deputy Head of the State Duma Defense Committee, Yury Shvytkin, told RIA he is inclined to believe that the "MANPADS' origins are linked with Western countries."

  2. The pilot bravely chose the less painful way out. He's to be praised. May the Russians be swift and overwhelming in their response.

  3. After seeing what the camelfuckers did to that Jordanian pilot why would ANY pilot allow themselves to be taken alive. I have no doubt that all pilots operating in that region have already made the conscious decision to go out fighting rather than be captured, tortured and made a spectacle of while dying. As for the device used to bring down the jet......both the US and Russia have been selling those things to anyone who would buy them ( if their 'politics' were acceptable) for a long long time. It's called karma....which frequently comes along to bite you in the ass. We are just lucky a motivated savage hasn't managed to get one of those close to a major western airport and taken down a large passenger jet. I suspect that eventually they WILL manage that.
