I’m Not Breaking Up with America This Valentine’s Day, and Neither Should You

Via Greg

Memes, Period, and Banging: "How we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would
things have been like if every Security operative, when he
went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain
whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye
 to his family?"
"Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in
Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city,
people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with
terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every
step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing
left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an
ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers,
or whatever else was at hand?.."
"The organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage
of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's
thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt!"
"If...if...We didn't love freedom enough. And even more we
had no awareness of the real situation.... We purely and
simply deserved everything that happened afterward."
Aleksandr I. Solzhenitsyn "The Gulag Archipelago"
“There’s absolutely no evidence to support the statement that [America is] the greatest country in the world. We’re 7th in literacy, 27th in math, 22nd in science, 49th in life expectancy, 178th in infant mortality, 3rd in median household income, number 4 in labor force and number 4 in exports. We lead the world in only three categories: number of incarcerated citizens per capita, number of adults who believe angels are real and defense spending, where we spend more than the next 26 countries combined, 25 of whom are allies…

“[America] sure used to be [the greatest country in the world ]… We stood up for what was right.

  1. When I was on alert, I read the the Gulag Archipelago in paperback.it was about three inches thick. I had previously read other books of his which need to be read in the original Russian to fully understand his sadness with his country. I believe anyone enamored with socialism and communism should read him. and, from what I have read from multiple sources; he is correct in his assessment about the Russian people not loving freedom enough...it is difficult to choose between guns and butter when you don't know what butter is.
