Everest: Three more die amid overcrowding near summit

A photo from Nirmal Purja's Project Possible expedition shows a long queue of mountain climbers lining up to stand at the summit of Mount Everest

Three more climbers have died on Mount Everest, taking the death toll to seven in a week - more than the total for the whole of last year.

The three died of exhaustion while descending on Thursday.

It comes amid traffic jams near the summit as record numbers make the ascent, despite calls to limit the number of climbing permits.

Nepal has issued 381 permits at $11,000 (£8,600) each for the spring climbing season at the world's highest peak.

  1. On the way back, anything these hikers have no need for anymore,
they just throw it on the ground as trash - lots and lots of
trash. I had no idea one had to pay to hike up Mt. Everest.
One man died the other day, on the news last nite, from O2
deprivation. All attempts to save him failed. He was 54.

    2. Its typical of all the popular places. That $11,000 is just for the permit. There are lots of additional expenses. Popular hikes in the USA are regulated by lottery. Then there is normally a fee on that too. Like a lot of hunting trips.

    3. I like squirrels/rabbits and they are abundant here with no permits required. :)
