Black Bear Sightings Becoming More Common in North Carolina

Black bear sightings throughout North Carolina are becoming more common as the bear population increases and bears expand their home range. While black bears are not inherently dangerous and are rarely aggressive toward people, the Wildlife Commission provides guidelines the public can follow to avoid potential conflicts.

  2. We have them here and they walk so quietly you will never hear them. Two years ago a lone male 300 pounder walked right in back of me and I didn't even know it. A mama and her cubs are to be avoided at all costs. She will kill you.

  5. LOL, grilled Boo Boo!

The main ones that bother us are the yearling cubs who's mothers are weaning them and sending out in the world on their own. They wonder around in civilization for a while looking for a free meal before they find their way to the hard life in the woods.
A couple of years ago there was one hanging around my neighborhood. He was spotted on a neighbors deck helping himself to the contents of a now destroyed bird feeder. The guy opened the back door and fired a .45 round into the ground within a few feet of the bear. He looked up as if to say "what the hell did you do that for" and went about his business undeterred. Another neighbor called the Wildlife officers and was rudely told that the bear had a right to be in the tree in their back yard and they better leave it alone.
