Boy interrupted: Where Elliot Rodger's life took a turn

Not ones to let a good crisis go to waste, progressives of a certain stripe looked at Santa Barbara’s Friday night massacre the way preschoolers might a pony under their Christmas tree.

Three immediate narratives emerged from Twitterdom even before the bodies were counted and sorted.

The first and most expected was given voice by Richard Martinez, the father of one of the victims, Chris Martinez.

“Why did Chris die?” asked Martinez at a Saturday press conference. “Chris died because of craven, irresponsible politicians and the NRA. They talk about gun rights, what about Chris’ right to live? When will this insanity stop?”

It is hard to fault a grieving father his outrage, even if misdirected. It is easy to fault those many pundits who exploited Martinez’s grief and gleefully spread his message across cyberspace.

Had they paused just a half a day, they would have learned that the killer, Elliot Rodger, had stabbed as many people to death as he had shot to death. For good measure, he ran over a few more in his BMW.

Does the “insanity” extend to knives and cars? Should AAA have shared the blame with the NRA? Is it possible that the politicians in question are not “craven” but conscious of their fellow citizens’ constitutional rights?

  1. Call me heartless if you wish, but if the dead kids father is looking for sympathy from me; it's between s--t and syphillis in the dictionary. As I understand the matter the parental units of the punk made every mistake in the book for turning out a little monster of a child.
    1) They never said the word NO to him
    2) They never discipled him
    3) They pandered to his every want and desire on demand, when ever he wanted
    some thing from them.
    4) They continued to let him believe that he was the center of the known universe.
    5) They gave him zero in the way religous training...
You know that commandment from GOD: You shall NOT murder. it is there for a
    good reason.
    6) They never taught the punk that; yes life IS unfair. Deal with it.
    7) They taught all the wrong values. material stuff vs the content of your character.
    8) They never showed him examples of what a real man is, and how he behaves.

Mr Richard Martinez is also part of the problem too.
Your son died due to the actions of the punk. Hold him responsible and hold the parents accountable for their failure as parents. You are also making a mistake by assuming that social evils and problems can be corrected by legislation. You might want to reconsider that one. The ONLY control we need is SELF-control. Now, stop your damn whining, start reading your Bible and start going to church each and every single Sunday. I dont know of any place, at any time where a society was actually safer and less violent due to "sensible gun laws". Well except maybe all the grave yards of people murdered by their own government

  2. Yeah, whatever. My first wife was killed... well, died after 31 days due to massive injuries caused by a drunk driver slamming into her as she crossed the street. I hate drunk drivers. No one should be behind the wheel of a car drunk anymore than they should be behind a weapon while their cranial space is sloshing with alcohol... but I also detest DUI checkpoints. And I don't go around demanding we have more. The last person who told me we needed DUI checkpoints and needed more, told me, "Wait until one of your loved ones gets killed by a drunk driver." Yes, I came unglued.

  3. So we have multigenerational failure to accept responsibility. The son wanted to blame the world because he couldn't get a date, and the father wants to blame the NRA because he raised a murdering sociopath. Marvelous.

  4. That father was a POS before the incident. Nothing (from that perspective) changed.
