America's Coolest Small Town 2015

Via Cousin Colby

(Population: 9,744)Locals like to say that Washington has a small town feel but big town activities. The waterfront downtown is a major draw, with a renovated theater, wonderful shops, and a wine-tasting scene that surprises some visitors. The Pamlico River is popular with the sailing crowd 10 months of the year, and hunting and fishing are thriving activities in the area. Founded in 1776 and named for General George Washington years before he became our nation's first president, this town wears its history proudly but lightly, sometimes referring to itself as "Little Washington."

If you ever get to Little Washington, NC don't miss Bill's.  You'll have to wait and pay cash, but the chili is the best.
There are three toppings: chili, mustard, and onions.  No more, no less.  No ketchup.  Get over yourself.  This is Bill’s.  You are going to like it, just order it all the way.

  1. When I used to cruise those waters, I was constantly amazed at what could be discovered there. There used to be a elderly transit boat greeter who would always give each lady on board a rose and then a ride to any place in town you wanted. A spot nearby was where an entertainment paddle wheel boat once docked frequently and was the inspiration for the musical "Showboat". The only barber shop downtown had signed photos of every celebrity you could name. When I asked the barber what was the story on them he replied, " I don't know they just all give me an autographed photo when they come in for haircuts." I told him that was incredible and he said, ""No, its just normal, Ernest Borgnine just got out of the chair you're sitting in. "
I'm told Edward Teach had a house there too and half the people in the town are descended from him.

    1. Good story. Didn't know that about Blackbeard but I've been to his place in Bath. Believe he had one in Beaufort also. I like Ocrakoke.

  2. Another cool town which a 40 yr. court battle ensued to keep from destroying the
    town.
