Military gravestones used to build patio, staircase; some belonged to Alabama veterans

Via Billy

The federal Department of Veterans Affairs' inspector general is investigating reports that a southern Missouri patio and staircase is made out of military gravestones.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Navy veteran Ed Harkreader of Mountain Home, Arkansas, posted on social media last week photographs of the arrangement he found on property in Ozark County, near the Arkansas line.

  1. Wow. That's both ballsy, extremely disrespectful and sort of sick all at the same time. Fubar

    1. We do it with bricks, but not gravestones. If some were being replaced and the descendant requested the old one, then I could see making some sort of memorial.

  3. This is similar to the story at Arlington where the pit of "used" gravestones was discovered and attributed falsely to improper handling of graves. They were in fact stones that had been replaced with newer ones.

There is nothing sacred about a headstone apart from marking a grave. If the grave itself is intact and properly marked, there is no harm done. These are quite possibly extras, stones that were replaced, or stones that were delivered by contained errors and were unusable.

You can purchase as many headstones as you like with your own name on them, or even the name of Barack Obama on them and use them any way you see fit. They are just stones. If they were stolen from a grave (as the Nazis did), then and only then is that desecration and deserving punishment.

it would be nice to get the facts first. My outrage meter is getting too much of a workout lately to spring into everything.
