Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday offered to give political asylum to former FBI Director James Comey, poking at tensions between Comey and President Trump.

“If Comey will be under the threat of political persecution, we are ready to accept him here,” Putin said at a press conference, according to Russian state media outlet TASS.

Comey testified last week that Trump pressured him to "let go" of the FBI investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn before Trump fired him. Comey acknowledged leaking his personal memos about his conversations with Trump to the media, which the White House has seized on to attack the former FBI head's credibility.

Putin compared Comey's decision to leak details of conversations with Trump to the actions of Edward Snowden, the National Security Agency leaker who was granted asylum by Russia.

“This is strange. How then is the director of the FBI any different from Snowden? He is not a head of the special services, but a human rights activist,” Putin said.

  1. The Russian leaders have great humour.

I hope the recent riots aren't undermining Putin's popularity. Russia would likely burn without Putin. They're extremely lucky to have him, even if he's imperfect.

They were rioting over corruption it seems like. And I expect what they're really mad about is low oil prices and the economic harm from sanctions.

  5. You know, this is conspiracy against Trump by the war worms
of 'our' gov. It amounts to psychological torture -
something the CIA would do. Trump is duly elected by us,
the people and is unable to do his job for constantly
defending himself against slanderous lies. Jay, one of
Trumps attorneys who is very good and a Constitutional
attorney says all of this is unconstitutional. Hannity
says THEY will keep on until they get rid of him.
Trying to break Trump. And that Brennan told Trump to "watch
your mouth" what I take to be a threat.

    2. The article I read yesterday stated the comment by
Brennan was a threat which I cannot find as I went
to quite a few sites. Here is one where Brennan's
      comment is mentioned:
In the States, the outgoing CIA director, John Brennan, has instructed the new president: Watch your mouth.

  6. Putin is just 'stirring the pot'. He is keenly aware of how unbalanced the left and the lame stream media is and he is certainly not above making the occasional comment to keep things boiling. Confusion, confrontation and disagreement in Mordor on the Potomac serves him (and others like China etc.) well. And of course the lame stream media will fall for his antics.
