Three million people in the United States leave their homes every day carrying a loaded firearm, according to a new survey published in the American Journal of Public Health.

The online survey of 1,444 handgun owners was conducted in April 2015 by researchers at Harvard University, Northeastern University, the University of Washington, and the University of Colorado. They estimated that of the 36 million handgun owners in the U.S., approximately 9 million (24%) carry a loaded handgun every month. Of those 9 million, roughly 3 million carry every single day (35%).

For context, the survey’s results indicate that more Americans carry a firearm than active duty military personnel in the world’s 10 strongest militaries. The Chinese military – the closest contender – boasts 2,333,000 active duty personnel, nearly 700,000 soldiers short of the American concealed carry army.

  1. Now factor in those gun owners do not carry, but do have a loaded firearm close at hand in their own homes. Assuming, the home owner will admit to it, if asked in a survey.

  2. Hi Brock,
So,"Who's doing the counting??" As Joe Stalin said,"It doesn't matter who votes, what matters is 'who counts the votes,'" How big was this survey population and their demographics??? Personally, if someone I don't know, what ever his reason, asks me "if I pack??" First I'd look at him like he's a nutcase and then tell him to mind his own business.....
Any surveys like this are about as accurate as estimating the amount of whale shit at the bottom of the ocean!!

  3. What percentage of people don't actually have a gun in their homes? And those who live behind an armed guard gate, which is not prohibitively expensive, don't count as "unarmed". They're still guarded by something more than just the police.

Increasingly, I expect to see more guard gated neighborhoods. It's fairly efficient in areas where the police aren't enough. Since we've lost the old community bonds, guard gates seem natural, especially for retirees.

If I had the money to "gentrify" (develop) a rough area, I'd do so with a guard gate :p
