$12 an hour is conservative rocket fuel, says Ron Unz

$12 an hour is conservative rocket fuel, says Ron Unz

A nationwide minimum wage of $12 per hour would shrink government, aid families, curb illegal immigration, spur high-tech investment, and boost GOP support among working-class voters, says Ron Unz, the California libertarian entrepreneur who wiped out his state’s Spanish-only K-12 classes.

The $12 wage would slash the huge taxpayer subsidies now given to companies that hire low-wage immigrants, and move tens of millions of Americans into the middle class and sharply reduce the 47 percent of the population who are now completely or partly dependent on federal handouts, Unz told The Daily Caller.

“Politics would be completely different… what you’re doing is reducing the 47 percent by 10 to 15 points and giving Republicans a chance to make their case about cutting government spending and reducing taxes,” he said.

  1. Nobody who favors the government outlawing jobs that pay less than a certain arbitrary amount (in Newspeak, "minimum wage laws") is any kind of libertarian. They are a collectivist and a statist.

The defining characteristic of a libertarian is their belief in and adherence to the Zero Aggression Principle: That all human relationships should be mutually voluntary, and that the only moral use of force is in defense of person or property against aggression.

Since government "minimum wage" edicts require the initiation or threat of force against peaceful individuals, no true libertarian would advocate them.

    1. Agreed. I don't believe that there are many who would score 100% Libertarian.

  2. uuuhhhh...no....it would do none of the things Mr. Unz claims.
what it WOULD do is kill many minimum wage jobs as employers use more automation, or just quit and go out of business.
it would also drive, by causing inflation, gas to $4.50/gallon....milk to around $5/gal.
and within a year the $12/hour minimum wage would be declared "unlivable" and Mr. Utz will be demanding a raise to $15/hour.
don't think i know what i'm talking about?? i lived thru the Carter years when Jimmy "primed the pump" 5 times in 4 years and inflation rose to around 11%.
and if you are making less than $12/ hour today, ask yourself this question..."can i afford to work for minimum wage?" cause if it is raised to $12...you WILL. your boss will not raise your wage above $12 because he's a nice guy, he has to show a profit too.

    1. & cut back hours and require the same amount of work done. That's what I would do with government jobs: We're cutting the work force in half and those who want to stay will do the work which two are doing now. Period. I've worked as a civil servant and embassy employee and it's just like in fishing, 10% do 90% of the work.

  3. Not only is he not a Libertarian, he is an outright fool. Raising minimum wage actually only lowers every other wage via price inflation. It causes more poverty, as A) companies cannot afford to hire new workers, or even keep their current payroll numbers and B) the price of goods and services goes up while wages over and above minimum wage do not rise. Welcome to the politics of serfdom, brought to you by people who obviously failed Economics 101 and think that breaking windows stimulates the economy.

    1. Economics 101

Doubt if it's taught anymore just like ethics and civics.
