Hueys in Vietnam to Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter

  1. Was sitting by my lonesome several nights back & recalling that funky metallic sound that's generated when a small-arms round hits a Huey. Ya never forget it.

As Cav. infantry, we did many air assaults in '67-'68, including a number of the first night assaults. This video caused me to recall that, the last I knew, we were still being denied official "air assault" status because we didn't complete the air assault training program --- WHICH DIDN'T EXIST IN THOSE DAYS.

Suddenly, I feel my almost elderly heart pounding so probably shouldn't go into a rant.

Love your site! Always top notch stuff here! Thanks!

Thank you for your kind words, Sir and I have much more I could post especially on VNCH soldiers who fought until the very end, but when I start, it just depressives me and April the 30th remains the saddest day of my life. The Rangers were knocking out tanks in the streets of Saigon until the 30th when they were told to surrender. There is plenty of fault to go around, but even the NVA said, Thieu was forced to fight a poor man's war and he made a fatal decision to evacuate the highlands. It looked good on paper, but the best army in the world couldn't evacuate 400,00 civilians under horrendous fire targeting the civilians. Did you ever see this one: ?

By noon on March 16, a mass of humanity; troops, dependents and civilians were clogging the old road. Some 400,000 civilians, 60,000 ARVN, and 7,000 Rangers began the attempted escape to the sea.

By the time that the last straggling men, women, and children had reached Tuy Hoa on the coast; 300,000 civilians, 40,000 ARVN, and 6,300 Rangers were missing, never to be accounted for.
